Food shopping and budget.
I am watching Jon and Kate plus 8 (because it is my new favorite show ) and first of all she said she spends 150.00 a week to feed her family. And she buys ORGANIC. I need lessons from her!!!
Anyway. I never say to my self I am only going to spend this much at the store. If I did Im not sure I would even stick to it. I really should though

Re: Food shopping and budget.
I know she doesn't buy ALL organic. In interviews, she has always said that she buys organic to the extent they can afford it... but still, $150/week for 10 people with organic included is amazing. She is amazingly organized. I give her so much credit.
I think having a menu for the week and sticking to it makes it easier to save money on groceries. If you have a menu, you know exactly what you need and can make an accurate list. If you can stick to that list, then you will hopefully not be buying things you don't need, etc. I know for me all those impulse buys really add up... and food is getting more and more expensive.

True. I'm sure she buys a lot and freezes also. I saw an epi were they bought a cow. That last them a year.

Wow. I guess with 10 people, you need a lot of freezer space.
I don't watch regularly, but I have seen lots of episode where she has dinners made ahead of time and frozen for when they are away or something so the kids always eat homemade meals.
We buy certain things and keep them frozen (like chicken breasts, which are a staple in our house). I also make a big vat of spaghetti sauce and freeze in containers that each hold one night's worth... I make and freeze homemade soups that way, too.
Even still, with 2 of us, our grocery bills are never less than $50 per week.

Re: Food shopping and budget.
She's said that was a miscommunication. She spends about $150 a week at the grocery store, but that their overall weekly budget is higher since she shops in multiple stores to get the best deals and they get the meat in bulk, etc.
I still think she has grocery shopping down to a science to be able to get to the store, home and put everything away while the kids were napping. She was really organized with a list, the flyers and coupons all ready ahead of time.

Re: Food shopping and budget.
That makes a lot of sense.
We go to Costco every 6 weeks to stock up on certain things, which keeps our grocery bills lower. We also go to the butcher a lot for meat, which keeps the grocery store bills lower, but doesn't lower our overall food bills.

I still need to cut back, man, I spend over 200 a week and that's not including trips to BJs or diapers and wipes, etc.

none of them, pretty sure she comes up by me to Super Walmart in Monroe.
Which Beth, I cannot believe you still do with the price of gas - is it still worth it?

I have to go there for other reasons-
but the money I save makes it well worth it
I get gas in NJ- about 50 cents a gallon less
I only drive on the weekends- and it's for my little "hobby"/business- so it's worth it

Re: Food shopping and budget.
you gotta buy on sale & freeze. last week at stop & shop, boneless skinless chicken breasts were on sale for $1.99 a pound. I bought 4 huge packs, separated them and froze them for later. a few weeks ago they had ny strip steaks on sale for $4.99 a pound. sure, it hurt when I bought $40 worth of steaks in one trip- but that's a good price and now we have steak for the rest of the summer. I have stocked up on so much, I find now when I go shopping, the weekly total isn't as high b/c I don't have to buy meat. I will even go to different stores (IGA, etc) to get meat if the sale prices are better. I find w/ meat, you really can do very well on price and it is worth it. It also makes the rest of the month's shopping really fast b/c you are only filling in.

This bugs me so much - we just don't pay attention to what we spend our money on! (when it comes to food!)
eta: we don't eat meat, our staples are veggies and breads

Re: Food shopping and budget.
We don't have a budget, but I do shop for the sales. Just last night I went to Super Stop & Shop and they had chicken thighs on sale for $.99 lb. So we bought four big packages of them and put them in the freezor. We want to have a BBQ in a couple of weeks, so this was perfect. We have one of those extra freezers now, so we are going to start to really use that and buy in bulk especially for meats. I'm going to start freezing other things too so that dinner time is a lot easier.

Re: Food shopping and budget.
One thing I will not budget for is food. We love to eat and cook! I buy what ever is on sale and stock up if I can. I compare coupons and use circulars to comparison shop, so although we do not have a budget, I am definitely getting a bargain! I will cut other things out before i put myself on a food budget!

Re: Food shopping and budget.
We're a family of 5 and I spend $100-$125 per week. I calculated one month and I had spent over $800 on food alone!! After that, I made sure I stuck to a budget. I also do comparison shopping when the circulars come on Fridays and I stock up when something we use regularly is on sale.
With that said, it's been getting more difficult to stick to my budget b/c food has gone up so much.

I go by what looks good and fresh, THEN price. it hurts sometimes when we get the bill, but we forget all about it when dinner is on the table

us too. I'm a foodie..I buy organic, specialty items, cheeses..olive oils..etc..I do look for sales though on household stuff..that's where I'll really be cheap.

Re: Food shopping and budget.
DH and I spend 200 per month for two of us when we go shopping at Shoprite.
We get most of our grocery there and the majority of the items we buy are on sale. If it's not on sale we dont buy or we'll buy less of it.
