for moms that had C-sections?

with multiples, does the C-section get riskier than a singleton? or is it the same ?

and do you bleed alot afterwards?
i am just trying to understand what to expect instead of being surprised .

I think the risk is the same. I had c-sections with both my deliveries. The only difference with the twins was that I didn't get to hold them - I gave them each a kiss and they went right to the NICU. There was nothing wrong with them. That's just the procedure at Good Sam for pre-term babies.

for me, the sections were very easy. I did bleed - don't know what you consider a lot. It was no more for two babies than for one. You have to use the big, jumbo pads - it felt like a diaper!!!

I was so much more relaxed the second time than the first because I knew what to expect. The first time, I went in to be induced only to find out that the little stinker had turned over the weekend and was breech and I needed a c-section!!! I was amazingly calm the second time around (despite the contractions!) I got wheeled down to the operating room and walked in. They did the spinal, I layed down and my doctor was there talking to me and joking around. The anesthesiologist I had was great too and he was making me laught. They prepped me and made sure I was numb and then they started cutting. DH came in and honestly, it goes sooooo quick. One baby and then one minute later the next!! Then DH left and followed them down to the nicu and I was stiched up and talking to the anesthesiologist. When I was done, i was moved to recovery. From there it's a blur but I remember being really cold and they put this air blanket on me to keep me warm. My parents were suppose to come in to see me for a second but they didn't for some reason. Then, DH came in to say goodnight - he was leaving. I was wheeled to my room, put in bed and passed out. I do remember waking up in the middle of the night and feeling my stomach but then remembering, they weren't there anymore.

My only recommendation is do not get morphine!!!
I was getting shoulder pain while being open (I believe this is common) and the lady gave me morphine. I said it still hurt so she gave me more. For the next 5 hours I was throwing up every minute to every 5 minutes. It was awful. I stayed in recovery for 6 hours, didn't get to see my new babies till 3 pm and my c-section was at 9am. I ended up getting a fever and I think I finally stopped throwing up my 2nd day.
People tell me that morphine is a drug that some people can tolerate and some can't. I highly recommend dealing with the shoulder pain (if you get it).

edited - my experience otherwise was great. recovery was amazing and i wasn't too sore.

I had a pretty good experience. I don't think it would have been any difference if there was one baby. They came out a minute apart, got checked out and placed into DH's arms. Before they wheeled me to recovery, they put them in my arms and I held them in recovery for a little while before they went to the nursery.

I bled a lot the first couple of days and then it was really no worse than a heavy period.

I was a nervous wreck before my c/s because when I had DS he wasn't a section....and the thought of it freaked me out!!

But when the time came......I was so clam walking to the OR. I was scheduled at 8pm. Nurse came to get me about 5 to, they wheeled me in a wheelchair down the hall, brought DH to the room to put his scrubs on and I walked into the OR. I was so calm, the nurse and anesthesiologists kept asking if I was ok!! lol

Surgery started a little after 8, my OB kept talking to me b/c he knew I was nervous. They give you the spinal, lay you down and before you know it the surgery is started!! DS was born at 8:39 and DD at 8:40. They were 5 weeks early so I got to see them quickly...they took them over to amke sure they were OK. DH went over by them. They brought DS over for me to kiss him before he went to the NICU and did the same for DD a few minutes later. I was so focused on the babies and listening for them crying that I didn't even realize what was going on with me......next thing I knew they were done and I was ready to go to recovery!

The bleeding was heavy the first few days, but not terrible.......after having a vaginal delivery this seemes like nothing!! I used the big hospital pads the first few days and by the time I went home I used Always for heavy flow.

My biggest advice it to get up and move!! I had the surgery at 8pm, had to stay in recovery for 8 hours b/c I had pre eclampsia and got to my room about 4:30am.......and the nurses/aides had me up in the chair by 8am. And I was in a wheelchair to go to NICU by 10am. The next day I walked to the NICU. Walking and moving around is key to keep the gas movng around (from being open, you naturally get air in the body and you want to keep it moving)
And take pain pills!!! Even if you think you don't need them take them the first few days!

i had an unplanned c/s with DS after pushing for 4 hours and will have a c/s again with these babies. i asked my dr and she said it shouldnt be that different bc of the twins. i definitely feel much more comfortable this time around bc i know what to expect.
what i found most surprising was how long it took to finish the surgery AFTER my son was born...keep in mind that the baby (or babies) comes out quickly - its the putting you back together part that takes awhile, so dont get alarmed!!
for me the worst part was the recovery - especially the first few hours waiting for the spinal to wear off. since you said you already had a spinal you know what that is like already.
there was a lot of bleeding after, i dont know how much bleeding you get with a vaginal though so i cant compare.
i was uncomfortable for about 2 wks after the surgery...i still felt some numbness in the incision site for a couple months after, but no pain.

OH - and i def recommend pain meds and sleep aids in the hospital to help you sleep!!!


ETA: oh and i def agree with the PP about getting up and walking around -- definitely helps get everything "moving" and will make u feel better!

Mine was an emergency after I delivered the first twin vaginally so the bleeding may be different, but it was pretty heavy, it was the same as when I had my first son. I would also advise you to get up and moving as much as you can, it really helps.

I had a great experience. Bleeding, but I don't think it would have been any more then if I gave birth vaginally. The only difference was there is a lot of people in the operating room. Each baby gets a set of nurses and I had one pediatrician for each baby. I also delivered at Winthrop which is a teaching hospital so I had a few interns, a resident interning with my doctor, anestheologist......it was pretty busy for awhile.

The worst part for me was my nose was itchy from the medicine, but nothing else.

Be prepared though for the recovery room. Most people go for 2 hours, but I had to stay 6 hours because they said there was more complications with twin delivery. Since the boys were early and went to be checked to see if they needed NICU time, I did not get to see them for almost 8 hours....that was the worst part for me.

Yes, thanks for posting this. I am so freaked out about the possibility (or probability) of a c-section. It does help to have some knowledge of what to expect!

I had a FANTASTIC experience with my c-section. Mine was an emergency because they were early. I was in full blown labor so I was freaking out because I was having contractions as they were giving me the epidural but once they got that in I was fine. I didn't like not being able to feel my legs though. I bled but not too much. I was up the next day. It helped me to get up and get around. I guess I was determined to because they were in the NICU though.

Morphine was my best friend after wards i had the pump and every 6 mins i pushed that button like i was getting candy lol.. it helped me alot with the pain. especially when i had to get up for the first time.
