C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
If your first was a C-Section, did your doctor permit you to go VBAC? Did they insist on a repeat C? Did you choose repeat C?
Just looking for some insight. I left my old practice after I gave birth to DS. I started at a new practice with 8 doctors. Up until today I have only seen one particular doctor, who I really liked (met with him 3x).
Today I saw another doctor and we discussed TTCing again and she said I would have to do a repeat .. I am a little put off by it and I am wondering what everyone's doctor has told them...
Thanks, I am really upset with this as I thought VBAC was an option and I am not sure if it's the doctors preference or something that is the norm ....

I had a repeat c-section. I went into labor on my own and was thinking of trying to go vaginal but then I took my OB's advice and the safe route and did a repeat. I had a great recovery with both.

If you don't mind me asking - what did your doctor say? What was his reasoning?

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
my dr said they wanted to do a repeat c-section and did not recommend the VBAC... her reasoning was that there was not enough time in between, (DD will be 22months when DS is born) and even if the chance is 1% that I will rupture, the consequences are that I and/or the baby could die. She said that that was not a chance they were willing to take no matter how small the percentage.

I was a repeat and would choose it again if I had to do it over. I wasn't a good candidate for VBAC but I also didn't want to take the risks involved.
There are really several things that come into play if you are thinking VBAC. One you need a supportive OB BUT you need to be a good candidate - and that depends on you AND why you had a csection the 1st time.

That's the thing, I am not understanding WHY I am not a good candidate. Her reasoning was "Because you never had a vaginal delivery, we don't know if you can have one so we would rather you have a repeat C." When I explained why I had the C Section (low fluid & baby was tangled b/c of low fluid) she said "that has nothing to do with it, we only recommend VBAC for women who previously had a successful vaginal delivery, then a c section - those ladies can try..." It just doesn't sound right ....

i had a repeat but i was given the option by my OB. her reason was b.c my 1st C was an emergency and i had no complications etc. i wound up going with the C and am glad in the long run i did. DS was big and very high up there! the recovery was 100x better the second time around!

Your uterus can rupture from the incision from the first c-section during a vaginal birth. You could bleed uncontrollably or worse. I wasn't going to take the chance.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I had a repeat c. I discussed VBAC and my doctor supported it. I had the original c/s because my DD's heartrate went really low and I wasn't dilating (not that I was in labor for that long ); after every other intervention: oxygen, pitocin, terbutaline, amnio-infusor, laying on different sides, etc. etc. they did the c-section.
Anyway, I WAS a candidate for VBAC, but the conditions were that I could not be induced, nor be more than a week late. I *thought* I scheduled the repeat for a week after my due date, but when I got the confirmation in the mail, it was scheduled ON my due date. I felt like it was some sign from God so didn't change the day...I didn't end up going into labor and that was that...

repeat C - my OB doesn't perform VBACS and that was fine with me because i personally would not attempt one.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I had just met w/ a Dr. to discuss this. He said due to the reason I had a c-sec in the first place, there wasn't any reason I couldn't try for a VBAC. However, he did say he was one of the FEW Dr.'s who probably felt this way.
I had DD via c-sec b/c we induced b/c she wasn't growing. During the pitocin, her heart rate kept dropping and I ended up w/ an emergency C. My Dr.'s opinion was, I didn't end up w/ a C-sec b/c my body couldn't handle labor/delivery.
All that being said, as much as I would love to try for a VBAC, I'd probably steer on the side of caution and wouldn't want any blood vessels breaking anywhere or my uterus tearing and I'd have a re-peat C.
Best of luck to you!

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
you might want to "shop" around for a provider - also try a midwife and do some research on your own. that way at least you'll be informed. some drs won't so them simply because of the insurance risk while others have very valid reasons, so if you're informed you'll be able to distinguish between the two.

See, this makes sense. I can understand having 'rules' in place for VBAC. As does havng children close in age ... At minimum I would give birth 3 years or more after my c section so I more than am healed. I'm not even pregnant yet and I am being told it is not an option - the only reason being that I never had a vaginal delivery.
I want to make an informed decision and plan on doing a lot of research on the topic. I am not against C Sections - I would just rather not have surgery if it is not neccessary.

My doctor said it was my choice. The first time my induction failed and I am not sure I want a repeat of that. I am leaning towards repeat but haven't made up my mind.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
mine gave me the choice.
he is all for a vbac and we will make the final decision at week 32.
i am leaning towards c-section...but if i go into labor before scheduled c, then i want to attempt a vbac.
he said he would let me go to week 41 if i wanted to.
since i live in such a blended area full of transplants...it is simply outrageous how many mid westerners and west coast moms have sucessful vbacs...one even at home with a midwife!
NY seems to run differently...with VBACS, nursing...not sure why. I admit, I was so happy to be given the choice. Which ever way we go, I appreciate the choice.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I had a VBAC. My OB was cool with VBAC, but I went to a Midwife (Stony Brook Midwives) because not only were they "okay" with it, but they were very supportive, which is necessary to VBAC success. Yes, there are risks involved, but I did my research and found that the risks were low enough that I was totally comfortable with them. I also discussed them with my Midwives (better than discussing with an OB becaue Midwives tend to be a little less alarmist). I was a good candidate based on my health & history, so I went for it. It worked beautifully & I am very happy I went that route & had that eperience.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I just asked my doctor about this yesterday. She said I could have a VBAC and went over the potential risks with me. I am 99% sure I will have another C-section, but if I go into labor before my scheduled date I may try a VBAC.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
I'm doing a repeat c-section with this baby and I didn't even consider a VBAC. It's just not a risk I want to take, plus I had a great recovery from my first c-section. My office will consider it in some cases, but really recommends the c-section again. I also think that many insurance companies have a say in it.

Re: C-Sections Moms - did you go VBAC or repeat C Section?
So at my 5wk appt after the baby I spoke to the md who did my c/s and I asked the spacing of my next pregnancy to vbac. He didn't give me a time frame and is supportive of the decision. MInd you my primary provider is his partner a midwife. if it's important to you get another opinion.
