For newborns- Do you use diaper rash cream at every changing?

I never really use diaper cream. I just feel like right now at 8 weeks, my DD butt is not irritated, so I never used it. Thinking about it now, wasn't sure if you were still suppose to put it on at every changing regardless if there is redness. Just wondering what others do.

Only on her last diaper before bed, which is after her bath because she generally is in that one longer.

I was told not to use diaper rash cream unless there is diaper rash. I just use vaseline. DD is 4 months and so far so good (knock on wood!)
I was told if you use diaper cream as an everyday thing, then when DC does get a diaper rash it won't work.

I use Aquafor at every diaper change, unless she has a rash, then I use Triple Paste. I do use Triple Paste though with her bedtime diaper since she is in that diaper for at least 12 hours.

Re: For newborns- Do you use diaper rash cream at every changing?

when DS was a newborn i only used something if his tush was red.

once he got older, we realized that putting diaper rash cream on after every change helped prevent diaper rash. this is also because his poops are more solid and seem to cause more redness than newborn poop.

he will be 1 in a week and has only had two minor diaper rashes so far.

i think we'll do the same with baby #2.

I've always used diaper cream at every diaper change since my DD was born. We use Boudreaux's Butt Paste. If she ever does get irritated and rashy I use Triple Paste to clear it right up.

I did the same! I was told to only use diaper rash cream when you see redness. I have a small tube of Balmex and I have maybe used it three times. DS has never gotten a real diaper rash, just a little redness.

You shouldn't be using baby powder at all. It's dangerous if babies inhale talc-based powders. My ped and the baby books I've read don't recommend using it.

Pediatricians no longer recommend talc-based baby powders because they're dangerous if inhaled, but I see no danger in cornstarch-based powders if they're used sparingly and carefully.

Use a cornstarch baby powder in your baby's diaper area to help reduce moisture and friction, which can occur when a wet diaper rubs against your baby's skin. Today's diapers tend to be super-absorbent, so most babies won't need daily powder if you change them frequently.

You don't want your baby inhaling any kind of powder, so make sure that you don't get it near her face. Instead, pour a small amount into your hand away from your baby and then apply it when you see her diaper area starting to look a little irritated from chafing.

There are times when cornstarch powder isn't a good idea. If your baby's skin is raw from diaper rash, for example, it's probably best to keep powder off it and use a diaper ointment or cream instead. And if your baby shows any signs of a skin infection — like areas that are red and very warm to the touch or oozing — then don't put powder on it, either. Instead, have your baby's doctor take a look.
Jo Ann Rohyans, pediatrician

Baby powder may smell and feel good, but I don't recommend it — and the American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends against it. Powder can cause breathing problems and serious lung damage when inhaled, and it's not always easy to keep the powder out of the air where your baby might breathe it.

This is most worrisome with talc-based powders, which have small, easily inhaled particles. Cornstarch, which has larger, coarser particles, is not as easily inhaled as talc.

There's no evidence that baby powder helps to prevent or treat diaper rash, either. The best preventive strategy is to clean and pat dry your baby's bottom at each diaper change and then apply a thin layer of protective ointment or cream.

If you wish to use powder, choose the safer cornstarch-based product. Shake the powder into your hand, away from your baby, never directly on or near her. Keep the powder container well out of your baby's reach at all times, too. You don't want it to fall over and produce a cloud of powder for her to inhale. Occasionally, you can use a medicated powder in the neck folds or groin folds as long as you don't allow it to build up.

Finally, to avoid irritation, carefully wash away any powder that may have accumulated in your baby's skin folds whenever you change her diaper.

Re: For newborns- Do you use diaper rash cream at every changing?

NOpe I never use it. I was using it all the time at the start and he got irritated. I tried Caldescene powder and it cleared it right up. So I don't use anything.. if he gets a bit red 1-2 apps of the powder clear it right up. Everytime I have tried cream (all different kinds) it has made it worse.

ETA: if you use powder sparingly and infrequently it isn't that bad. Just turn your back to them, shake a tiny bit into your hand, and cup your hand and just gently pat it into thier bottom.

We use Johnson's cornstarch baby powder, as recommended by my ped. for heat rash. If you turn your back to them and put a little in your hand, there is little chance of them inhaling it.

If there is no rash you can use vaseline or A&D as prevention.
