For those that EBF - Q for you (actually now two questions).

How many times per day does your DC "dirty" his diaper and how old is he?

For those that have read my posts I had to switch to formula for a week while on antibiotics. I am now back to almost EBF and am shocked that 4 wk old DS is going from one dirty diaper every day-two to a few a day and wondering if he is sick or my BM is not agreeing with him?

Also - How freq should he be eating at this stage. With the formula he was only hungry every 4 hrs. Now it seems like he is hungry much sooner like every 3 hrs - not sure if I am misreading his cues? Also, I am nursing but pumping alot and giving him bottles as well so this is the case even when he gets the same ounces.

DD used to poop like everytime I fed her at that age! I think it's perfectly normal, BM gets digested VERY quickly...

At one month, a newborn should have a bowel movement after every feeding.

Your baby's poops are normal for a BF baby. My DD used to poop 6-7 times a day.

Yes, breast milk is digested much quicker than formula so DS will probably want to eat every 2-3 hours. So if you were to give the same amount of formula vs breast milk, he should be hungry sooner with the breast milk.

It sounds like you are doing great!!Chat Icon

It is not unusual to have more dirty diapers when you BF and BM is digested much faster than formula - which is why some peds recommend giving formula at night so a BF baby might sleep longer.

DD had a lot of dirty diapers during the day at 4 weeks - that is totally normal.

Re: For those that EBF - Q for you (actually now two questions).

Many poops a day is normal. BM is like prunes in my opinion!

In fact, today at 9 months DS seemed a little constipated so I BFd a little more since I'm home and low and behold - a massive poop!

At 4 weeks DS ate every couple hours still and sometimes almost continuously. It gets better! Just nurse when you think DC is hungry. Don't worry about overfeeding.
