i get NOTHING paid... i am a teacher. i can take the 12 weeks FMLA or a full year (I am tenured) but we can't afford to! i am only 10 weeks and i have already cried about this... i am due in early July and am SICK that i might have to put a 2 month old in day-care....

i am hoping i can work part-time at my school.

where are you a teacher? in NYC you get 6 weeks from the baby's bday; assuming you have sick days in your bank

i am on LI.... i could use my sick days IF the baby was born during the school year. the baby is due July 4th, so the 6 weeks would be up by September and you're not allowed to use sick days unless the teacher herself is sick or recovering. i'll be recovered from deliver by September.

I hate that! This is the reason we were trying so hard to get pregnant before the summer. It worked out that I am due in April so I won't go back until September but I still hate that other people are in that situation!Chat Icon

Re: For those who plan to return to work, how much time are you planning on taking off?

The most I can take is 12 weeks (FMLA). I get paid for 7 days for maternity leave plus another 7 days for one sick occurence (we dont accrue sick time at my job, we jsut get 4 sicks occurences per year, each occurence can be no longer than 7 days & you need a doc note for any occurence that is more than 3 days). I can also use vacation time. I plan to use the 3 days I have left for 2008. Aside from that I get disability for 6-8 weeks at 60% pay. Since my maternity leave goes into next year, my boss is letting me use 2 sick occurences. This allowed me to stop working 1 week before my due date, still get paid & not really lose the time with my baby.

Re: For those who plan to return to work, how much time are you planning on taking off?

I'm taking 3 weeks before due date, and 12 Weeks Maternity. I'm only getting paid for a total of 8 Weeks, since I have to use my own sick and vacation days. I'm allowed up to 7 months with no pay.

I don't get any paid maternity leave except for disbability. I can take 12 weeks for FMLA. I may take 8 weeks or 12 weeks if we can swing it financially.
I had fulll 3 months paid with my last job. I am going to miss that!

I can totally relate. I too am a teacher on LI and I am due June 20th (5 days before the end of the school year). I won't be using many days maybe 5 or 10 depending on when the baby comes. Then I won't get paid because the theory is that they have already paid us for the summer.

I too will be returning in September. I am hoping the baby will be 10- 11 weeks by then. I may have my mom watch the baby for an extra week or so and put the baby in day care at the 3 month mark. We shall see.

I hear ya! We tried the April route as well but that wasn't in the cards. I am thrilled to be able to have the entire summer off. Then it will work out since my DH works 12 hour days and only 3- 4 days per week.

i planned to take a year and then reevaluate. well, 2.5 years later i never went back and just had another Chat Icon.

now the plan is to go back when DD#2 is in kindergarten. hopefully DH's job will remain secure and we'll be able to pull this off...

I am really surprised at how awful the benefits for teachers are in LI! It really does seem unacceptable.

Re: For those who plan to return to work, how much time are you planning on taking off?

I took 14 wks with our DS and went back part time when I did return. With this one, I'll take probably take 16 wks as I'll be tacking vacation time onto my leave at the end. Only 10 wks total will be paid between disability and vacation pay.
