For those with inground pools, or grew up with one.Help!
We dig Thursday. Our pool will have no diving board. As far as depth goes, how deep is your pool? If it came with your house and had the opportunity to redesign, would you keep the depth or change it.
We are contemplating to have the deepest end be 6ft. This way we will have more area to hang and socialize. We aren't much of divers, and want to have ample room to socialize. I heard the term "social pool". Does your pool suit your needs. Please help with your thoughts.
On a side note, our water table is high and we hit water after 6ft since we are on the beach. Dewatering cost approx 2k if we want an 8ft. It's nothing in the long term, but my concern is the integrity of the pool structure construction. Is it smarter to stick to 6ft since we mostly want that anyway and the water table doesn't get much higher than what it is now. It is a concrete pool. Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond.

I have an 8x foot pool. Dont discount the "diving" per se. Also. Throwing things to the bottom and retreiving. Its nice to have some depth. I have a nice shallow end that great for hanging out in. its MORE than enough room for the "social" stuff.
I would not re-design my pool.
No diving board either, and we jump in from the deep end ALL the time. Throw stuff down to get it. Its great.

Re: For those with inground pools, or grew up with one.Help!
I had this same dilema. We also have high water table and had to dewater, which cost an extra $5k.
My husband wanted a bigger little end, no diviving board and 6 feet depth only. In the end after much discussion with our pool people we decided to go with standard demensions of the deep end and to meet code (8 feet) and we put in a diving board etc for saftey reasons. Keep in mind even if you dont have a diving board that wont stop people from diving or jumping in a deep end and this can be very dangerous. Also a diving board gives people a designated spot to dive, again it is safer then diving and jumping from other points of the pool.
As you and your family grow you needs will change, resale value etc... something to consider.
In the end I am so glad we did, my kids love the deep end for swimming and diving.

Re: For those with inground pools, or grew up with one.Help!
we had our pool custom made, its defin a more social pool its a cool shape too.
There is an area you can stand in and also a ledge on one side which is good for kids because they can stand too. then we have a 6 foot depth on the other side. its good for raft races and jumping.
I did NOT want anyone diving in my pool i did not want that liability. I have read to many horror stories of people getting paralyzed diving and it gives me chills.

Re: For those with inground pools, or grew up with one.Help!
We installed our pool last summer and we designed it exactly how you did it. We have no diving board or slide and I am so glad. We have a larger shallow area to hang out in and our deep side is smaller with 6 or 6.5' of depth. Our last pool definitely had the ability to have a diving board but there wasn't one and we didn't miss it. It was a standard 8' deep side. I grew up with a diving board and I have seen first hand the stupid things teens and adults do with diving boards and I was very strongly against it.

For Mrs M and jersey mom, are you worried that someone will dive in and get hurt? I feel that once we tell people no diving allowed, that they will respect it.We obviously will teach our little ones the same. I've heard horrow stories about jumping from roofs but our pool is not close to the house, so I'm not worried. People can be stupid...especially drunk people. We are def leaning to 6ft. At this point. Thank you everyone for thoughts. Please keep them coming.

there really aren't many people that come to use the pool mostly my inlaws and sister in law and her boyfriend. I don't feel like any of them would do anything dumb. we play around but no diving its not deep enough and everyone knows that.
If i had a ton of different people coming over every weekend that i didn't know well then I might be concerned but its family only.
If any new people come this year I am going to remember to make sure I tell everyone no diving allowed.

We were contemplating doing 6 feet on deep end (no diving board for us either) but changed it to 8 bc We plan on adding a slide when DD is older. We had no water table issue though.
I don't think it makes a huge difference but I'm not a pro on water table issues

One thing to add is, be prepared that you may have to dewater regardless. We hit water around the 4 foot mark.

I'm not worried that someone would get hurt diving, because people can get hurt just walking around the pool. The pool we had growing up had a short diving board and our neighbors told us that the board actually broke and that was why there was no spring to it. When kids who know how to swim and teens get together they think they will never get hurt. I have seen all the following go on with my brothers when they were teenagers or at parties where people have pools with diving boards: - 3 kids jump in at the same time one off the diving board and then the other 2 off the sides. The kid jumping off the diving board usually goes towards one side, then the kids can collide. -a boogie board is put in the middle of the pool and kids run and jump to land on it. I have seen so many times kids getting to close to the edge. -kids jumping in with as many tubes around them. It's fine in the air but they come close to hitting there head. -as far as a slide is concerned, I am more worried about people falling down the slide while walking up the ladder. Even if it is gripped steps people can still slip or they rush to go up the stairs.
Now, I know all those scenarios can happen without a diving board but I feel better knowing that temptation isn't there as much because nobody is showing off, if that makes sense.

Growing up, our was 20x40 with an 8 or 9 foot deep end. One thing it had that iloooooooved was a3 inch ledge around the deep end. So the aside wall didn't just sloe down. There was a little walking room so let's say a ball went into the deep end. You didn't have to swim to get it, you could walk along the edge.
