Forward facing ---car seat related question
Trying to keep my boys rear facing in their car seats for as long as possible. I know by law is up to 12 months, but recommended to keep them rear facing up to 2 years. I am noticing that the boys will be needing more leg room soon. I think I might be able to stretch it until they turn 18 or 19 months (hopefully).
Just wondering when you turned your bundles of joy forward facing and why. Thank you for your advice ;)

My DS is 2.5 and still rear facing. He's not small either. He crosses his legs in his carseat to get comfy.

Re: Forward facing ---car seat related question
The length of the legs shouldn't factor into it. They can cross their legs or put them up on the back of the seat. Didn't bother DD at all

Re: Forward facing ---car seat related question
I switched my twins at 19 or 20 months I think. I was pregnant at the time and my seat had to be moved further back b/c of my growing belly but then that meant it would be pushing back on the carseat that was behind me. So I ended up switching them.

Forward facing ---car seat related question
Emmy was 2 and she was just over it. She was getting vocal and wanted to look at us and out the windows. She would just sit with her legs crossed and it never bothered her. I hope to keep Sawyer RF until 2 also.

Forward facing ---car seat related question
My son will be 3 in January and is still rear facing. I have no reason to switch him any time soon! As others have said, leg room should not be a factor. My son crosses his legs on his seat. I hate to be blunt, but in an accident, a broken leg is much better than a broken neck.

The vast majority of collisions are head-on. When rear-facing, the force of the collisions is absorbed by the entire seat, and the entire torso. When you are FF, the entire force of the impact is absorbed by just the straps, so there is more force on a smaller area. The head is also supported by the back of the seat, unlike when FF. Even adults are safer RF in a collision.

AND, there have been ZERO reported instances of broken legs just from the fact that they were rear-facing.

Ok but i have to ask. If it's safe to have them front facing after 2 years... why keep them rear facing at 3 years old?

Re: Forward facing ---car seat related question
My girls I changed at 12 months because I was uneducated on the matter. If I knew then what I know now I would have never changed them so early. I thank Lord that nothing bad happened to them for me not educating myself on the matter. My DS is 19.5 months and I will not be changing him around any time soon. He is 33 inches tall and has no problems being rear facing.

Because rear facing is far safer then forward facing. Why not stick with something that works if it greatly increases their survival chance?

Because it's safER for them to be rear facing. Anything I can possibly do to increase my children's safety, I will do.

Re: Forward facing ---car seat related question
My DD was almost 3 when I switched her. And the reason I changed her was that I was really starting to have trouble getting her into the seat, as her legs were really squished in there. She never minded. When she wanted to get our attention, she would just turn her head and yell to us. And I sort of think she liked it...she could see everything out the back window, plus it was easier for her to see and talk to her sister (who was FF).
I've noticed too, that since I switched her, she never falls alseep in the car anymore, even on long trips!
