A ff carseat still has harnesses and is good for ages 2 (the recommended age for turning ff) until they outgrow the harnesses by weight (again, the recommended time)
A high back booster is just a booster with the back for added supoort. It os to be used with a cars seatbelt. The MINIMUM AGE for that is 4 years old AND 40 pounds. There are other factors to take into consideration if a child is ready for a booster or not though.

Ok-- so a booster doesn't have its own straps and uses the seat belt, but a "car seat" has the five point harness.
Now I;m not confused! Thx!
DD turns 4, four days after DS turns 1- so I am just trying to figure out what we need in our cars.

Personally I feel more comfortable using the seats until the max. My DS is still RF and will be 2 in a few weeks. I am planning on keeping him RF until the new baby is born in january. Dd was in a harness until she was about 6.5 year old and a booster until 9.5 years old. (She was a little girl. She's 13 and barely 90 lbs and just hit 4'9")
Legally a high back would be good, safety wise I would get a harness seat. That's imo though.

Actually there are plenty of high back boosters that still have 5 point harnesses - such as the Graco Nautilus and Britax Frontier. We have both of them.

im no expert but this what i thought. I am pretty sure some boosters are high back 5 point harness and say 20lbs and higher IF this is correct can someone tell me what the difference is between this type of seat and FF car seat. They put my nephew in the 5 point harness booster seat cause it said 20lbs and higher and i nearly had a stroke and basically made a big deal and told my parents and his other grandparents he should be in a car seat preferable RF still ... he is only now 21 moths old when this happened he was probably only 19 months

Yes, there are a lot of convertible seats that are FF and boosters in one and others that do all three (RF, FF and booster) my evenflo symphony is one of them, but the main difference when buying a seat that specifically says "high back booster" is that it has no harnesses and is to be used with a cars seatbelt.
From what I have seen seats that say 20 pounds and up are following the old recommendation of "turn at one year and 20 pounds" and can be FF only while the new recommendation is 2 years old regardless of weight and height (it has more to do with the maturity of the neck muscles and vertabre) and therefore a convertible that can RF is necessary.
The 2 year old age to turn from RF to FF is a recommendation, it is not law. Will it prevent them from further injury in event of an accident if RF, yes, most likely. Just like keeping a child over the age of 4 in a harness rather then a belt positioning booster will lessen their chance of injuries.

just some input on the booster. AJ used one while we visited NJ. I have to say i HATED it and so did she. That strap ended up being practically at her throat. it moves around a lot. Yes she's 4 but no not 40lbs. I did not feel safe with it at ALL. It seemed to me just a way to re position the strap but not really 'tie her down'. I'll stick with my Convertible car seat for as long as I can (max of 70lbs or height limits).

The Nautilus, Frontier and similar seats are called Combination seats although some retailers stick them under the booster label, others under convertible. Others will call them harnessed boosters, still others will call them toddler seats. But if it has a harness and converts to booster mode, it's technically a combination seat.
There are four types of seat:
Infant bucket: this is the carry handle style, rear facing only seat that attaches to a base
Convertible: Can be used FF or RF, has a harness. Some also can be used as a booster
Combination: FF only seat which contains a harness which can be removed and the seat can then be used as a belt positioning booster
Booster: also called a belt positioning booster. Can be found in high back or no back models and are used solely to position an adult seat belt on a child.

Yeah, if the belt is coming across her neck, she is not ready for a booster, that isn't a proper fit on her. Your mommy instinct is right, it's NOT safe if the belt doesn't properly fit her.
5 step test (for boosters and adult seat belts)
-Sits with back/bum all the way to the back of the seat, no slouching forward - Knees bend comfortably at the edge of the seat -Lap portion is across the upper thigh area, NOT the soft belly -Shoulder portion is across the clavicle/shoulder, not the upper arm or neck (or even face) - Can remain seated in position the entire trip, no moving or falling out of position. Has the maturity level needed to not fiddle with the buckle or belt, place belt behind back or under arm etc.
A booster (or later, adult seat belt) which is uncomfortable for a child is going to cause them to fidget and get out of position. They'll play with the belt to get comfy, putting it behind their back or under their arm, slouching, or even undoing it.
