fostering dilemma
So DH and I decided after the holidays that we would volunteer to foster dogs for the Little Shelter in Huntington. I think it would be a good fit for us. We are busy over the holidays so it works out great that the shelter isn't taking new foster people till then...ANYWAY...today I get a call from the woman from the shelter saying there is a man looking for someone to foster his 14 year old maltese while his mom is in the hospital...right now its being borded at the vet...but he can't afford it anymore. it woujld be 4 weeks until she can take care of it herself again...
So my first instinct was so say I'd help...BUT after talking to the shelter they told me that it would be a private thing and hte shelter is not responsible..they are just trying to help...so that left me worried that this man could just leave me with this 14 year old dog! I mean fostering is great for me b/c the shelter takes care of any medical help I would need...but this wouldn't count for that...so I am very hesitant. I'd like to think that people are good...but who knows? In the end I told her I'd rather help out w/ the shelter in the future...she agreed but I kind of feel bad...

Re: fostering dilemma
That's tough because on one hand, if it's totally on the up and up and he isn't trying to be rid of his dog, I doubt many people would help out there.
On the other hand, people can be really callous when it comes to animals and if there's no recourse, you could absolutely be 'stuck' with the dog and possibly vet bills too if it's not well.
I'm not sure what I would do in the situation. Perhaps I would talk to the vet that's boarding the dog now or meet with this man to learn more about the situation.

Re: fostering dilemma
It is tough. I feel so bad for hte little 14 year old maltese in the cage...but i can't imagine that NO ONE this man knows couldn't help out. Especially since it's only for a short time and his mom wants it back...that's why I question this. The shelter told me they are going to feel the guy out. They were a little weary of having me do it too. I guess I'll wait to see what they say...

Re: fostering dilemma
i would have red flags in my head too. You could be stuck with the dog if the owner doesnt get better, I guess if that was the situation would the shelter consider taking the dog?
I totally understand about medical bills that was my first concern when I thought about fostering. Since this dog is older you never know what will happen.
Dont feel bad, I'm sure you would help if you could.
