Freaking out - my newborn baby may have been exposed to a cold sore
I am so worried...Dh woke up yesterday with a cold sore. He hasnt had one in over 3 years and I have never had one, even when I was exposed to DHs in the past. So I am freaking out, cold sores can be deadly to newborns and DD is just under 2 mths old. THey say they get immunity from the moms for 6 mths but I don't honestly think I have ever had one in my life so I doubt I am immune.
Dh kissed DD on the head on Saturday, possibly on the face (not lips or eyes though). I am so nervous, I am taking her to the dr this evening (she has a rash that I think is just a pricky heat type rash but now I want to be sure) and DH is goign to the dr to get medication to knock this thing out. We are pretty good about washing our hands, not touching eyes or mouth, etc but still...he did kiss her head before realizing he had a cold sore coming out, that's for sure. So the mere thoguht that she was already exposed is freaking me out. Can anyone tell me any stories of having had a newborn and someone in the house with a cold sore, and that everything was ok?
The worrying about this little girl is going to be the death of me, I worry about her so much.

Re: Freaking out - my newborn baby may have been exposed to a cold sore
The night DD was born and I was in the hospital I got one....I have gotten them since I was a kid....and I was around DD....OBVIOUSLY kissed her etc etc...held her before it came out and made an appearance.
When I KNEW it was there and had come out I had NO contact with her (ie: kissing....) But I held her, BF'd her, did everything else, just didn't allow it to come in contact with her until it healed. And if I touched it (by putting meds on it, I washed my hands before touching her)
She was never affected by it.

I've gotten a couple of cold sores since Kaydyn was born. I'm careful about not kissing her and stuff. She hasn't been affected by them.

Re: Freaking out - my newborn baby may have been exposed to a cold sore
I get them often and sure enough got one while DD was about 2 mths. Well she got one too It was on her left arm, in a weird area. I had no IDEA it was a cold sore until I took her to doctor and he said it was. Nothing to be afraid of, just that I probably kissed her ( like a mother would do) and she got it, esp since babies immune systems arent that strong in beginning.
It wasnt severe so It cleared up quickly.
She did get it back again in the same area, a month or so ago. Treated with some lotion.
I feel terrible that she can get them now but apparently EVERYONE has this virus in their body and some are one that get them more fequent than others.
Nothing to worry about and Im sure you DC is ok.

Thank you all ladies, I feel SOOO much better reading your stories.
Can I ask you, what did the rash look like on DDs arm? My DD has had a rash since Sat on her neck folds, that area but we think it's from spitting up and the clothes rubbing, it's all on one side, the side she spits up on. It looks like prickly heat, never blistered or looked odd really but I am going to her dr tonight to get it looked at for sure.
What did your DDs rash look like, can you describe it? Did it look like a cold sore?

Re: Freaking out - my newborn baby may have been exposed to a cold sore
I got one before I left the hospital with DS. The C-section is obviously taxing on the body and with anything of that sort, I am sure to get one. The doctors say not to kiss the baby when I have one. There is nothing I can do about what happened before I knew I was getting a sore. I have never given my baby one! In fact, I have never given them to anyone that I know of. Also, DH tries to change the baby as much as possible when I have a cold sore. It's just a preference we have.

it was reddish and then bumpy and eventually blistered, small ones in that area.
SO OBVIOUS that is was fever blisters but I wasnt sure.
What you are describing just sounds like a rash from the formula or spitting up and esp in the neck folds....very common.

Re: Freaking out - my newborn baby may have been exposed to a cold sore
Please don't worry- they are not deadly- just uncomfortable to the baby IF she gets it. She may not. My whole family has this virus in their system(the one that causes cold sores) and even though I was exposed a million times, I never contracted it myself. Try not to worry
