Holy big baby Batman!!! (Results from my 35 wk growth sono)

My OB wanted me to go for a growth sono a wk early because my belly is measuring really big. So we went to the hospital this morning and the baby (give or take 1lb for margin of error) weighs 6 lbs, 15 oz, which is coincidentally what I weighed when I was born. I'm 34 w 6d today and he's measuring 37 w 4 d. Holy crap!!!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We just saw the tech today, I have an appt with my OB on Thursday afternoon and we'll see what she says...whether they're just going to up my due date, or talk about early induction or possible scheduled c. The last possibility is my worst case scenario personally, only because my birth plan is to have Chat Icon vaginally and possibly w/o medication at all, so a c-section will break my heart. But i'm not going to stress yet until we see the dr. on Thursday and find out what she thinks. Wish me luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

P.S. Any other big baby mamas out there have any advice/insight??

My belly was measuring big, when I went for a growth sono at 37w, 2days, my dd was measuring at 8lb, 3oz

she was born 12 days later (at exactly 39 weeks) and weighed 9lb, 8oz

I was a big baby- I was over 10lbs and born 5 days early. When I was born I looked like I was 3 months already.

When I went for my growth sono, I was told I was having a 9 lb baby. They induced me 1 week after I was due-so they let me go past my due date.

B was 7 lbs 15 oz.

omg......what a difference!!! See, this is what I'm worried about. I'm scared they're going to jump right into the c-section and then he's going to be smaller than they said and it turns out I could have pushed him out all along. If I didn't feel so strongly about having him vaginally I guess it would bother me as much. I so wish the sonos were 100% accurate so you'd know for sure. Chat Icon

I am measuring big too but I dont know how big - I'll find out Wed.

I do not want a c-section either.

I would prob ask the dr if she thinks u can be induced sooner!

Re: Holy big baby Batman!!! (Results from my 35 wk growth sono)

Ds was born on his EDD at 9lb 14oz.

one thing to keep in mind is that sonos can be wrong, before makign a decisiont to have a scheduled c/s I went for 2 by 2 different people at the hospital, one was the head of the dept and the other was a sono instructor so my dr felt confident if they were off then it wouldnt be by much. I was told DS was 9.1 (10 days before my EDD)and 9.4 (2 days before my EDD)

I didnt have my heart sent on a v-birth and when I weighed the options of induction vs c/s I felt the c/s was right for me. But this is only because I had not dilated at all, if I had dilated on my own even a finger tip I would have opted for an induction.

My advice is to talk to your dr honestly, get all your information, and even ask the Dr if you were his/her daughter what would he/she suggest. Then think about what you feel is best for you and your little one.

Re: Holy big baby Batman!!! (Results from my 35 wk growth sono)

Your OB might be concerned because of the combo of the belly measuring big and the growth sono.

A friend of mine said her OB didn't measure her belly throughout the pregnancy, just a few times at the end. She had a growth sono that predicted a large baby, but the baby was 7 lbs and change.

On the other hand, I was measuring large and the growth sonos measured DS large. My OB was concerned that the baby was large. At my 35th week or so, we started seriously discussing me having a CS, if I didn't go into labor before 39 weeks. I had a growth sono at 37 weeks, DS measured 9 lbs and he was born a few days later at 9lbs., 1 oz.

juat want to mention, if you want to avoid a c-section, an early induction is NOT The way to go. Those lead to c-sections more often than not unless you are significantly dialated before the induction begins Chat Icon

She was concerned, that's why she sent me for the growth sono earlier than she usually does she said. My belly has been measuring large since 30 wks. Not too large at 30 wks, but at 33 wks I guess my belly size jumped dramatically so she then wanted me to go in a wk early to get the sono. But I still have to see her this wk now that we have the results so we'll see what she says. What ended up happening? Did you go vaginally?

I know, I've been trying to do lots of reading about it since a few wks ago when my OB first said my belly was measuring large. So I'd like to avoid early induction as well....if possible of course.

But it's so helpful to know all of your experiences as well with the big babies so I feel like I get a good amount of different experiences. Chat Icon

This situation I would feel fine about a c-section. If the baby is distressed obviously I want to get him out quickly and safely. But I just feel like, if he's ok and I'm ok, i want to try and stick it out. But I'm just curious as to how difficult that will be (vaginally) if he is indeed really large and am worried that the option will basically be taken away from me if they think he's too big....I just don't want to be told ahead of time, oh he's going to be 9 lbs so you have to have a c, before I even get a chance to go into labor on my own....but if that will be worse in the end, then i don't know what to think either. I'm kinda scared. Chat Icon

PLEASE remember that YOU decide what your labor will be like, NOT the doctors

as long as the baby is not in distress, you should be able to labor. However, also remember, laboring for hours and hours and then having a c-section is one of the worst recoveries, because you have to recover from both, KWIM?

From the jump, my doctor and I had an agreement. I would do the pitocin, try to labor on my own, and if my labor stalled, we would do the c-section

that is what happened, 6 hours on pitocin, STILL only a fingertip dialated and fetal distress - the c-section was a no-brainer for me and I had the BEST delivery and recovery

this baby will be a scheduled C- sect and I am fine with that too

My aunt delivered her first vaginally and he was over 13 pounds!!!

Everyone is different, but you should be given the chance to labor if that's what you want.

Re: Holy big baby Batman!!! (Results from my 35 wk growth sono)

My story is that I went for a growth sono when I was approx 38 weeks 3 days b/c my belly was measuring big also. They estimated a 9 pound baby at that point. My doctor said we can induce but would probably end up with a C-sec anyway since I wasn't dilated. I wanted to wait and see and my doctor respected my wishes.

I ended up being 8 days overdue and went into labor on my own and delivered a 7lb 8oz baby. So in my case the measurment was off.

HTH - good luck!
