Freaking out re:whooping cough. Does this make sense?
I saw my aunt yesterday at my cousins bridal shower. She kept clearing her throat saying it felt phlegmy and she has had it for a couple of weeks. NEVER coughed. Today she went to the dr. and her dr. told he it could be whooping cough and gave her antibiotics. I thought whooping cough was a REAL bad cough where you can't catch your breath and it was viral so there are no antibiotics. My mother said I had it as a baby although I was vaccinated.
I dont really think it's whooping cough but why her dr. would mention it to her I dont know. I am more freaking out b/c if it is, can I pass the germ on to Derek? He only has 1 DTaP vaccine. He was around her last week but again, wasn't coughing. I didnt even know she had anything wrong.

Yes. But DS has only had 1 of those vaccines so he isn't fully protected.
I dont think they did the swab on my aunt to see for sure if it was pertussis. They just started her on antibiotics.

Thanks...that makes me feel a little better. I will call my ped. and see if I should bring him in for a booster tomorrow.

Re: Freaking out re:whooping cough. Does this make sense?
There are differnt forms of Pertussis ( whopping cough) and many " Pertussis" like viruses. I had one last winter and at the same time my daughter had RSV and pnuemonia...I was allowed in the hospital with it, and my Dr. wasnt concerned with my other babies at home either...
I wouldnt worry too much. Antibiotics should be given and can usually wipe out a virus quick. If its been a few weeks, she is WAY past the contagious stage....the lingering stuff may hang around up to 8 weeks...

I spoke to the ped. and brought him in this morning for a booster. The ped. really isnt concerned. I hope it turns into nothing I definetely dont need the anxiety of going through that.
ETA: The only thing I am super nervous about is Derek's 1st birthday this weekend and my aunt will be coming. She went to the dr. on Monday and he put her on antibiotics. Will she still be contagious 7 days later even after antibiotics or will they wipe it out?

from my understanding, pertussis damages the little hairs in your lungs that keep the mucus moving, so the cough persists until they are repaired (aka long after the pertussis is gone). if she got sick a few weeks ago, i think you're ok.
