Fresh Mozzarella
I know we should avoid soft cheeses. On the lists I have seen of cheeses to avoid none list fresh mozz. Some places even say to eat mozzarella - but they probably mean the Polly-O kind. Has anyone asked this of their Doctor?

Re: Fresh Mozzarella
And just a little PSA...most soft cheese that are not imported (and even some of them) are pasteurized. I thought I couldn't eat feta, goat, etc, all of my favorites, but when I read the labels at the store, they were pasteurized and safe. I do try and stay away from them at restuarants because I don't know if they are imported and might not be pasteurized, but my guess is that they often are fine!

I've never heard that fresh mozz is a no-no. It's cooked so there shouldn't be any reason to say no!

Cooking is not the same thing as being made with pastuerized milk - which is what the FDA says about cheese & pregnancy.

Re: Fresh Mozzarella
as long as you eat it in moderation it's fine. Most cheeses in the US are made with pasterized milk.

check the labels where you buy it, I think all cheese made in the US uses pasteurized milk...

Re: Fresh Mozzarella
I wa stold no if it's sitting in water. Apparently that means it's not pasteurized? Not sure, but I don't eat it.

Re: Fresh Mozzarella
I was just asking this question yesterday!!!! I went to this Italian cultural event and they had this amazing chef making all the food and I had two pieces of fresh mozzarella, which he had made. I was wondering, after i ate it of course, if i should eat it, but I was there with 5 women who had babies and all said don't worry. My uncle who is a gyn/ob. gave me a little red wine and said "wash it down with this" and walked away!! My poor baby...actually, he is getting some good eats and drinks!

Re: Fresh Mozzarella
From the FDA website So unless your local Italian market or supermarket has cows in their backyard or is into the "cow sharing" thing, it is more than likely that the milk they use is pasteurized.
The Law It is a violation of federal law enforced by the FDA to sell raw milk packaged for consumer use across state lines (interstate commerce). But each state regulates the sale of raw milk within the state (intrastate), and some states allow it to be sold. This means that in some states dairy operations may sell it to local retail food stores, or to consumers directly from the farm or at agricultural fairs or other community events, depending on the state law.
In states that prohibit intrastate sales of raw milk, some people have tried to circumvent the law by "cow sharing," or "cow leasing." They pay a fee to a farmer to lease or purchase part of a cow in exchange for raw milk, claiming that they are not actually buying the milk since they are part-owners of the cow. Wisconsin banned cow-leasing programs after 75 people became infected with Campylobacter jejuni bacteria in 2001 from drinking unpasteurized milk obtained through such a program.

Re: Fresh Mozzarella
I'm almost 16 weeks pregnant and ate fresh mozzarella throughout my entire pregnancy so far with the ok of two different doctors. They told me to stay away from brie, blue cheese, feta and most mexican cheeses.

Re: Fresh Mozzarella
My doctor told me not to eat it. So I dont eat it too often. I'm not drinking, I'm not smoking and I won't even take a tylenol. I have to have some fresh mozzarella once in a while!

Re: Fresh Mozzarella
I was told no too. They said any cheese sitting in water (feta, fresh mozz) is no good, the standing water is a breeding ground for bacteria.
