Friendship lifespans

Do you think you are "meant" to be with any friend forever? Like the lifelong committment with your spouse, w/o the romantic stuff?

To answer my own question, I don't think so. Sometimes I look at my friends and wonder where we will be in 10 years, 20 years, 30 years. This is my worry-wart going crazy, but I really can't help it. For me, it's sort of like wondering how/when you will die.

Re: Friendship lifespans

Unfortunately, I've had so many friendships that I thought were "forever" turn out not to be the case.

I have a few friends in my life that I truly feel are meant to be there forever, even if we are not always as close. For example, my friend Leigh lives in VA. We talk every few months and see each other when she's up here, and we always just pick up where we left off. I've known her since I was 6, and feel like she will always be in my life in some way.

My closest friends are my cousins...so yeah, I'm kinda stuck with them forever! Chat Icon But yes, I think that we were meant to be friends forever...we've all had our spats and we get over it. We grew up together and have known each other all our lives. As far as non-family friends...I think the friendships that truly last forever are few and far between...those that have them are very lucky!

Re: Friendship lifespans

I never really thought about friendships and if they would last forever....

... I kind of lost touch with my best friend from grade school after we each started college... we found each other again last year and when we hang out now, it still feels like the old days, and she's my MOH Chat Icon

... whatever is meant to be, will be

I think their are certain people I was meant to be friends with at a certain time for a certain time. Their are certain people who I feel were meant to be life long friends.

The friends I have now, yes, I hope we are together forever. A lot of us just became friends about 5 years ago. I really hope our kids can all grow up together and become friends as well.
I really dont keep in touch with anyone from HS. Just one friend who, I was in her wedding 2 weeks ago. She;'s out of state, but, we are still very close.Chat Icon

I think there are definitely friends I'll have forever - we'll be gossiping away in the nursing home. So far I'm at 15 years with my closest friend - and 30+ with a few others. Also I have a built in lifetime friend - 2 sisters.

Re: Friendship lifespans

With some friends, yes. But as with a marriage, you have to work to maintain those friendships and there has to be give and take. IMO, If either person no longer wants to put in the effort, that is when they fizzle out.

i think some friendships can last forever... and some just expire. the thing is- i dont think you can really forsee which ones will fall into which category. life throws some funny things at you, and friendships can change so significantly by something that you dont yet even know is going to happen. i DO think its possible for friendships to last forever, i jsut wish it were easy enough to choose which ones would Chat Icon
