Futurecasting... Thoughts on a female president....
I feel a little bittersweet about the election, when I remember it's been 45 years since Dr. Martin Luther King's "I have a Dream" speech, and 88 years since women won the right to vote... Sure we've made progress but I feel like it's at the pace of an anemic snail... While so many other (seemingly) "less progressive" nations have done FAR better in electing/appointing females in positions of power...
So... what is everyone thinking about a female Commander in Chief... Will we ever have one? How long will it take? If its in the reasonably near future, who is the most likely female to win the nation's highest office?

Re: Futurecasting... Thoughts on a female president....
I think the doors have been opened and our possibilities are endless. I can see a female president within the next couple of years. This was the first time in history that a woman was on the VP ticket and I see a strong possibility for Palin to be the next GOP nominee.

Actually Ferraro was the first (with Mondale in 84)... so 24 years later and we STILL aren't any closer to a female executive... I see it happening imminently as well, though I don't think Palin will be the one the GOP selects in '12...

No it's not. Geraldine Ferraro was the first female VP candidate for a MAJOR party. There have also been numerous VP and Presidential candidates that were women for smaller parties.

Ferraro was only first for a major party. I'm pretty sure some third parties had women on the ticket prior to her.

not for a long time - i think as far as electing a president i think people are more sexist than racist - i can't see americans being prepared to be the executive of this country.

I stand corrected.
But I do have hopes that we can see a female president within the next couple of years.

Palin WAS the first woman VP candidate for the GOP, though.

Re: Futurecasting... Thoughts on a female president....
I think the door is open, and that we WILL see a woman president during our lifetime. (My DD is DETERMINED to be the first female president )
If Obama gets a second term, you might see Hillary run again in 8 years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_female_United_States_presidential_and_vice-presidential_candidates
There have been non "top two" party female President candidates since 1872, and female VP candidates since 1884.
I think we will see a female Pres fairly soon. Palin will not be it, though. Because of all the prejudice in the country still, a female candidate will need to be better than the male opponent to compete. Palin is not that person......

oh, I think we'll definitely have one... and don't necessarily feel we won't have one because of discrimination.... look how well people like Ferraro, Pelosi, Clinton, Palin, etc. were embraced.
Could it just be a matter of VERY few women actually being interested in being president? you have to put yourself out there and fight like a dog for it. maybe there just haven't been enough women out there going for it?

Personally, I'd like to have a lesbian black president. I wonder though if a female president would happen... my concern would be with foreign relations... not all countries view women as equals.

Re: Futurecasting... Thoughts on a female president....
i think we're closer than we've ever been before and that makes me so happy. I agree that change is slow, but it IS change and that's a great thing
I absolutely think it's a possibility. This election has opened the doors for many people that may never have thought they could run and now they may...

I agree. I think we are moving in that direction, slowly but surely.
But I really don't see Palin being the one, I think in order to be the 1st woman elected to the White house, we need someone less polarizing, we need someone that appeals more the masses, not just the conservatives, no way she would win.

Margaret Thatcher was a strong woman. Nobody messed with her.
I feel a strong woman could have just has much power as a man.

Women elected or appointed to heads of government. There have been quite a few countries....

Re: Futurecasting... Thoughts on a female president....
DH seems to think that a woman couldn't be president because other countries wouldn't take a woman seriously. Some countries still treat women like crap.
I don't agree at all. I think there are plenty of countries that have women at the helm.
He also thinks that Hillary will get out of politics but I disagree.
I bet a lot of people feel this way.

Re: Futurecasting... Thoughts on a female president....
Posted by smdl I feel a strong woman could have just has much power as a man.
I agree. Unfortunately, though, I don't think our society really caters to that. I'm not an extreme feminist or "wah wah wahh we have it so hard" kind of person either, but, really, we, as women, in this country make it SO hard on other women. We should build each other up- have that comradery that so many other groups have. But we don't. We tear each other down. We say that a woman should be home, focusing her energy on raising her 5 kids instead of running for office. We make ourselves feel inferior. We make other women feel inferior b/c of the choices they've made (SAHM, working mom, breast feeding, staying single, getting married, being too reserved, being too lose). We call so many characteristics into question for our fellow women than we EVER would for a man. We are our own worst enemy. We don't fight clean- we make it personal.. in a way that men do not. We make comments like, "I don't get along with other women- they're too biitchy/catty/whatevertermyouwanttoinserthere" and we think it means that we're above that, when all we're doing is perpetuating it. I don't think anyone should be a sheep and I'm not suggesting to stick together as women just for the sake of it. We could respect and support each other, regardless. If that happens, maybe we'll stand a good chance.
