Just playing devil's advocate: if the mom's flu shot is able to pass along anti-flu antibodies to the fetus, isn't there a good chance the thimerasol (mercury) in the shot would also cross the placenta and reach the fetus?

That is somthing I never thought of, but you can ask for the mercury free one like my son gets in his doctors office.

There is more in a vaccine then just that to cause alarm.

I think you are being a bit extreme. I can understand the concerns about mercury and other ingredients, but there is no cause for "alarm."

I am sure when the polio and smallpox vaccines came out people had concerns. But now those two disease are all but eradicted. Would it have been better if people were "alarmed" and didn't get those shots and people were still suffering and dying from those diseases?

I understand why people can feel passionate about getting the flu shot. Outside of pregnancy, I am quick to get it myself! Who wants the flu? DH has to get it every year too-- he's a type 2 diabetic.

But when a fetus or baby is concerned, I think vaccines in general really are a gray area and open to questioning. For example, as much as the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics have deemed the current vaccination schedule safe, I think there is a large population of parents out there who have every right to believe that a vaccine may have harmed their child in some way. You can call them quacks, but at the same time it's hard to argue with a parent who likely saw their child change overnight after a particular vaccine.

So as beneficial as vaccines can be (smallpox and polio are great examples), you have to understand why there is justifiable room for doubt and questioning when a baby is involved. I wish vaccines were safe enough to be free of controversy, but unfortunately that's not how it is.

Re: FYI Ladies - PSA

of course
just as with vaccinating your child; we cant prove or disprove that autism has NOTHING to do with it

however, the flu shot is not given directly to the baby - it is given to us; to protect us from what could be MUCH worse if we did get ill

I have never had a flu shot and will never have one

I just don't see the reasoning in giving the disease to me in order to keep me from getting it Chat Icon

I agree. I won't get it. I got it many years ago when I worked in medicine and I swear I felt sick for about 2 mths. Feverish and achy for a LONG time. NEVER AGAIN< esp while pg. I will take my chances on getting the real flu. JMO

Just to clarify- I'm not an idiot and do indeed know how vaccinations are given and why...it's just my own opinion that they don't work.

Now this is just a theory- but since we share blood with our babies, wouldnt they essentially get whatever is in the shot as well???Chat Icon

Re: FYI Ladies - PSA

I get the flu shot and pneumonia shot every year. I am a sever asthmatic so if I were to get the flu or pneumonia I wold be more susceptible to getting really really ill without it.

I think I didn't get it one year and I ended up in the hospital for a week with asthma complications resulting from the flu.

I can't risk having extreme breathing problems while pregnant.

I have NEVER had a reaction or gotten any symptoms from the shot.

For me the benefits outweigh the risks in my paricular case

I'm sorry - I just want to make sure I understand you correctly. Do you think that ALL vaccines don't work or just the flu vaccination?

Re: FYI Ladies - PSA

The state of NJ REQUIRES a flu shot for kids under 59 months. We would have DD get it anyway & I will get it as well. Always do.
