I'll take shocked over what I was any day of the week...

I was EATING when I found this out - I literally could not continue eating - that is how sick to my stomach I was over this thought -- and the thought of a nurse rocking the baby and holding it until it died because she felt bad.

I really can't even talk about it, honestly. It took all I had to even mention it this one time - It is very very very upsetting to me. Chat Icon

I have to say that I'm not familiar with this one--do you have any links on it-I'd like to read up on it.

I *saw* it - I do very little reading online because it is difficult to tell the difference between, sometimes, reputable sources and "blog" style sources that are just out of the realm of reality. But I actually saw it on TV - read an article (in print - not online) about it and saw the nurse (who was on trial as a witness) give her testimony. A lot of people do NOT know that this existed.

It makes me sick to even describe it - I'm sure you can find it online by doing a search - I can't even attempt that because a friend of mine did and found disturbing pics - I don't even want to TRY that. I know what I need to know. Sorry I can't be more help Chat Icon I am a wuss when it comes to this.

I don't like his answers about Roe v. Wade and how he won't necessarily try and overturn it--but instead he wants to nominate justices to the supreme court who are STRICT constructionists to interpret the Constitution "the way our Founding Fathers envisioned us."

Chat Icon just admit that you wanna overturn it ! Cause like Whoppi just said--does that mean we should put slavery back in, cause it was addressed in the Constitution by our founding fathers too. Chat Icon

Yeah keep knocking the Constitution. Its only part of what made this country great.

Again, Roe v. Wade is NOT in the constitution. The amendment abolishing slavery IS in the constitution - it is part of the constitution. Roe v. Wade is an interpretation of the constitution AS IT STANDS TODAY. As the constitution stands today, it contains an amendment outlawing slavery. That was an extremely ignorant and inflammatory remark made by Whoopi.

"The constitution" includes its amendments to date. I would expect someone interviewing a candidate for President of the US to know that.

I'm not *knocking* on the Constitution--I'm saying that the original document before any amendments were made was not the Constitution of today. There are amendments to the very document that "made our country great" for a reason--because the first time around it wasn't perfect and over the years it had to be amended.

Because I can recognize that fact, it means I'm *knocking* the Constitution? Chat Icon

To be clear, overturning Roe v. Wade would give all power regarding abortion back to the states, where many people (both pro-choice AND pro-life) believe it belongs. It would NOT necessarily ban or outlaw abortion throughout the country. As far as I see it, the only way to do that would be federal statute, which I strongly believe would be unconstitutional.

Oh I totally know it would go back to the states (although I realize that many people probably don't realize this.) But I just don't think I like the idea of it going back to the states and having more conservative states banning it while other states would keep it and therefore the choice of it for those who wish to exercise their choice would be forced to travel to other states to do so, where it is not banned. Therefore making the right to choice more difficult for those who seek that option. But that's JMO, I know everyone sees it differently and I don't want this to turn into another thread on the subject.

I don't want the RIGHT of a woman to have control over her body to even be DEBATED by states.

it doesn't matter to me that NY would most likely maintain abortion "legality". roe v. wade protected a womans due process rights and well as privacy rights. THAT is something worth fighting for!

When a candidate says they want strict constructionists of the constitution, they are talking about the constitution today - 2008, including all of its amendments. They are including the Bill of Rights and all other amendments to the constitution. It does not mean they support the constution in its very original form. To imply otherwise is, I think, unfair, unless a candidate says they want to amend the constitution in some way.

I saw it too - I am a legal geek - interested in this stuff. It is all over the internet as well. I am a little surprised that it didn't get more press as well. It is a little disturbing. He kept saying that the bill would be "anti-abortion" and that it would regulate a woman's right to have an abortion. I could never understand what he meant by that b/c it is just giving the baby medical treatment and care in the last hours of his/her life. He said that it would create a "burden" on a mother that did not want the child to begin with. very weird and cold. I also did not like how he called anything less than a full term baby 9months, a fetus.

So you actually *SAW* Obama say he believed it was ok to put a baby in a closet?

His opposition regarding the BAIP act is about preserving abortion rights - defining when a fetus is considered an "infant" or "baby". He was not condoning infanticide. It was a back-door act passed to eventually prosecute women that had abortions.

The bill has nothing to do with preserving abortion rights or prosecuting women that had abortions- nothing. I don't believe he was condoning infanticide at all. His arguments as to why he was against it were totally weak. Did you hear them or read them? I am pro- choice, but I disagree with his arguments.

I don't remember them going this hard on Obama. And I am embarrassed for the un-biased interview.

but ITA - his answers are disturbing.

I haven't seen it - but did they say they were going to give an unbiased interview? Because, to be honest, The View is anything but - that's the purpose of it, to give different points of View! - and is notorious for having heated debates between the hosts themselves as well as between hosts and guests.

On the Record

While we don't have a record of Obama's 2003 comments on SB 1082, he did express his objection to the 2001 and 2002 bills.

Obama, Senate floor, 2002: [A]dding a – an additional doctor who then has to be called in an emergency situation to come in and make these assessments is really designed simply to burden the original decision of the woman and the physician to induce labor and perform an abortion. … I think it’s important to understand that this issue ultimately is about abortion and not live births.

Obama, Senate floor, 2001: Number one, whenever we define a previable fetus as a person that is protected by the equal protection clause or the other elements in the Constitution, what we’re really saying is, in fact, that they are persons that are entitled to the kinds of protections that would be provided to a – a child, a nine-month-old – child that was delivered to term. That determination then, essentially, if it was accepted by a court, would forbid abortions to take place. I mean, it – it would essentially bar abortions, because the equal protection clause does not allow somebody to kill a child, and if this is a child, then this would be an antiabortion statute.

Obama's critics are free to speculate on his motives for voting against the bills, and postulate a lack of concern for babies' welfare. But his stated reasons for opposing "born-alive" bills have to do with preserving abortion rights, a position he is known to support and has never hidden.

How is a bill protecting/helping/aiding/giving medical treatment to a live baby have anything to do with abortion? Oy! It is just his way around saying he thinks that doing this is OK - obviously he does otherwise he would have voted for it like EVERYONE else did.

Oh lordy - this is why I can't search on this topic, discuss it too much, etc. because it literally makes me nautious. Chat Icon

Umm.

How did this turn into yet another abortion thread????

I can't claim to know anything about babies dying in closets - and honestly I don't care to because that is between that WOMAN, her health care provider,Docter, partner and her GOD.

Just like my views and what I want to do would be none of that woman's business.

Incorrect.

If you read back - you will see that someone stated that they would like to see Obama come on the view and get the same type of "hard' questions as McCain did. I stated that I would like to see him answer questions pertaining to the born-alive act - the MAIN reason I cannot vote for him - and other tough questions -- not "when are you going to get your dog and what kind??!!!" It is NOT about abortion.
