gay marriage question
if you are living in NY and go to say CONN where it is legal is it recognized in NY ?

I believe (but am not positive) that NY is one of the very few states that recognizes same sex marriages performed in other states, even though it does not perform them. So, while a same sex couple cannot get married in NY, NY honors the union performed in a state where it was legal. Most states don't even do this.
The federal government, however, does not recognize any same sex marriages.

That is correct. I have several friends who have done this (in Massachusetts, Canada) and back here in NY, they are able to get on their spouse's health insurance and stuff like that.

I had a friend who was interested in doing this but wasn't sure of the logistics behind getting married in one state and having it recognized in NY.
