GD Moms: Did you have to take a glucose tolerance test after DC was born?
I had glucose intolerance with my second pregnancy. I was able to keep my sugar under control just with changes in my diet. The place that monitored me gave me a script for the 2 hour GTT to take between 6 and 12 weeks PP.
I'm not thrilled about having to take it, but my main issue is the instructions state that I shouldn't BF 2 hours before or during the test. Did anyone get similar instructions? I'm not sure why I can't at least feed DS shortly before taking the test. There's no way I can go over 4 hours without BFing him. I'd rather not deal with pumping and trying to give him a bottle.
Were you expected to take a GTT after delivery? If you BF, what did you do?

Re: GD Moms: Did you have to take a glucose tolerance test after DC was born?
I didn't either. I asked my OB about it and he said GD usually resolves after delivery but if I wasn't feeling right after 6 months to let him know and he'd send me for testing. I now have GD again with my 2nd pg and was wondering if it ever went away after the 1st. Turns out my A1C (a blood test that looks back at your blood glucose range over the past 3 months) was fine so I didn't have it between pregnancies. Phew!

I had GD with #3. I did not have to take any of the glucose tolerance tests afterwards. My morning/fasting blood sugars were monitored in the hospital after birth and determined to be fine, and my OB had me do some blood sugar readings before I went back for my 6 week pp check up and he said I was perfectly fine with my numbers. No follow-up since then.

Re: GD Moms: Did you have to take a glucose tolerance test after DC was born?
I did.
I took a 2 hour one and was given the option of drinking the drink OR going into the lab, having them record the time.. then going to eat a normal breakfast and coming back in 2 hours. I did the latter.
I was not told anything about BFing at all. I am BFing twins and definitely couldn't go that long at 6 weeks PP.

I think it's unrealistic to comply with these instructions if you are EBF. Are your sugars still high post partum? Do they think you are a diabetic? There are other ways to check so if they insist on you not BF then you should inisist on exploring other options.

Re: GD Moms: Did you have to take a glucose tolerance test after DC was born?
I was given the script from my ob and took it once. After that i talked to my regular doctor and he said its un necessary since they have far better tests that if he was concerned he would send me for. BTW, my regular blood work came out fine so they didn't recommend any other testing.
It's an optional test IMO, and if you are concerned about it, I would go get a regular blood work up from your GP and talk to them about your concerns.
I think many ob's are prescribing it now, since there are some cases that don't resolve itself and many people don't go for regular testing.

Re: GD Moms: Did you have to take a glucose tolerance test after DC was born?
I was told to take it, but I didn't. I know I am fine. With GD I listened because it was about my DD's health, but since this is now just a test for me, I feel fine declining it. The place I go to also makes you take a 2 hour class while you wait... and since it is also far away for me... there is no way I am going to be away from my DD for over 4-5 hours since I also am BFing...

I didn't test my sugar much after delivery. When I did test, I did it after eating things that definitely would've put me way over the normal range when I was pregnant. I was within the normal range so I figured any blood sugar issues I had during pregnancy resolved themselves.
I never even developed GD during pregnancy. I just had glucose intolerance, which I was able to keep under control purely with diet. I think if I take the GTT, I'm going to ignore the instructions about not BFing. That seems ridiculous and unrealistic to me.

Re: GD Moms: Did you have to take a glucose tolerance test after DC was born?
i have to redo it in 2 weeks. Not happy about it, but it is what it is. In the long run it will keep me healthy.I have had to continue to monitor my sugars during the day since giving birth. I had some high numbers in the hospital, and now am following up with an endocrinologist. It is what it is, and this is preventative care to make sure you are ok.

I just did mine on saturday and no one said anything about not BF.
I guess it depends on MD or lab.

My midwife wants me too, I will be seeing her in a couple of weeks when she'll give me a script to have blood work done. I dont know about the not BFing though...I will have to ask her.

I would check a fasting sugar for your own piece of mind. A high fasting is a reason to be concerned (and want further testing)even if you went on a carb frenzy your body should be able to bring your glucose below 90-95 after not eating for several hours.
