generic meds VS brand name meds-do you care? wwyd?
DD has a bad virus, so yesterday her ped prescribed a strong antibiotic, I picked it up at the neighborhood pharmacy (I normally don't go there) and I just realized that they gave me generic. The thing is that for whatever reason (not really sure why) but I always prefer brand name to generic and I'd rather pay more as long as my insurance covers it. I use a different pharmacy for my own meds , and the pharmacist always asks me if I it's ok to give generic (and usually I say no, even if it means waiting to next day) or I call ahead.... Would you say something or just leave it? Do you care if you get generic VS non generic?

No, i dont see a difference.
Your DR. when writing a script will indicate not to give a generic if it's important to have the brand name.

I agree- if the doctor only wanted the brand name there is a spot on the prescription where they make that off

generic is only covered by our insurance just make sure that the correct generic matches the name you are supposed to get. I thought that it was the generic name for the medicine I got for dd and it turned out pharmacy made a mistake.

DH is a physician and he always goes straight for the generic brand.
He also buys CVS and store brand over the counter meds as well. He looks straight at the ingredients and technical name vs the company name.
I always preferred the name brand stuff thinking it was better but DH says it's the same thing. I believe him since he looks at the active ingredients.

Re: generic meds VS brand name meds-do you care? wwyd?
Here's the deal what generic is, its the same active ingredient as the brand medicine, but the inactive ingredients .. the dies the fillers the thing that holds the pill or liquid together, the sweetener, the flavor, etc etc.. are different
This is just my opinion, but in some cases the inactive ingredients do make a difference, but they aren't supposed to and no one ever studies it. Most doctors don't regard this as important enough, and most pharmacists don't either.

I always go generic because of our insurance, unless it is something that does not have a generic form.

Re: generic meds VS brand name meds-do you care? wwyd?
Hmmmm.... for an antibiotic I would probably leave it but I don't believe the meds are always the same.
I have had 2 doctors (my neurologist and an RE) prescribe me medications (one each) in the past where they insisted that they be dispensed as written, the brand name. For the one med the neurologist specifically told me that she specifically wanted the brand name bc the generic did not act in exactly the same manner as the generic.

YES, this is what my cardiologist told me about my heart medication, so I always make sure I get the brand name. Also few years ago I used to take something when my acid reflux was really bad and my GI told me to make sure they don't give me the generic brand, so I always got the brand name...

Re: generic meds VS brand name meds-do you care? wwyd?
I have read, and been told, many times that MOST of the time there is absolutely no downside to using a generic. However, there are a few types of medication (usually ones that are taken daily as a maintenance med), where brand name is preferred. One is a heart medicine that I don't remember the exact name of, and Synthroid is the other.
I believe this is because generic versions of a drug could come from a variety of manufacturers, and in drugs like Synthroid (which are dosed very precisely in micrograms instead of milligrams), even the tiniest discrepancy in potency from manufacturer to manufacturer could make a difference to the patient. Whereas if you get the brand name Synthroid, you can assume it comes from the same manufacturer each time you refill it.

Yes, I was going to post the same. For an antibiotic I would leave it. However for a script like synthroid, I am only able to take the real thing because the generics would vary too much each time I would refill and my body was/is very sensitive. I have never had a problem with any other prescriptions.

It's the same exact med. You just aren't paying for all the advertising the name brands do

yup. for antibiotic, pain relievers and things like that i always get generic.
certain meds the doctor prefers generic and then they should make sure to write it on the script. my doc only wants me to take the brand name syntrhoid too

I'm pretty sure that unless the MD checks the box on the script for name brand the pharmacy must fill with generic.
