Gestational Diabetes...

I have been following my blood glucose levels based on an elevated finger stick. They are concerned that I have GD. My numbers during the day are normal in the 70's and 80's but my first morning is in the 90's. They told me anything over 90 is considered GD, especially since in after fasting. I am just concerned and scared. This is my 2nd pregnancy and I did not have any issues with my first. They are having me go right to the 3 hour test next week. Please share any experience that you have had and or if you baby needed to go to NICU at birth because of GD. Thank you so much!

Gestational Diabetes...

Diagnosed with #1 at 13w. Ended up on metformin around 30w to control fasting numbers. DD was born at 39w weighing 7lb5oz and passed her blood sugars with flying colors. No NICU needed at all but they did have a team in the delivery room to check her out.

I was just sort of diagnosed with it at 24w with #2 so I'm just starting the whole process over. I passed the 1 and 2 hour draws but fasting was 94 which up until a few weeks ago, would have been passing with my dr but he recently decided that 92 and under is passing. I'm not happy especially since at first the NP said I passed and then came back and said whoops, we just changed it.

I found that the idea of GD was much scarier than actually having it. I was diagnosed fairly early in my third trimester. I was on a really strict diet and had to test my sugar multiple times per day. My OB also monitored me more frequently in the last month of my pregnancy. I was allowed to go into labor on my own, delivered vaginally, DS was an average size and thankfully he was perfectly healthy. He did not need to go to the NICU. GD is scary but if managed properly, there is little risk to you or the baby. Good luck! Feel free to FM me if you want more info or need to talk.

Thank you Ladies!! The idea of it scares me. I worry more for the baby then I do for myself. I hope it continues to stay under control I am only 22 weeks so I still have plenty of time to go.

Gestational Diabetes...

I am pregnant with my 3rd and just found out I have GD again for the 3rd time. In both my previous pregnancies I was able to maintain normal levels through diet modification alone. It wasn't too bad and I ended up not gaining too much weight with either pregnancy. Both babies were born at a normal weight (7lbs 7oz and 6lbs 15oz), completely healthy. Like a PP said, I found the idea of GD much scarier than actually having it.

Re: Gestational Diabetes...

My fasting numbers had to be 90-100. I controlled with diet. At time of delivery - baby measured pretty small with was unusual so I was induced. No NICU stay needed and she ended up being a healthy size!

I also had it with my first. Morning #s were always a bit high for me. Daytime I was perfect. They put me on 5MG of glyburide at bed time. DD was born at 39 weeks at 8lbs 14oz no issues with her sugar. Perfectly healthy. This time I took the 2 hr and passed by the skin of my teeth. I m sure I will be going back and get diagnosed next time. No worries, the monitor you so closely and as long as you do what you are supposed to food wise I am sure you and LO will be perfect!
