Gestational Diabetes Moms! Come In!

Hello All!

I had Gestational Diabetes with my first pregnancy so I know that there is a good chance that I will have it with this one as well.

My doc hasn't mentioned yet my glucose test, and I recal that in my 1st pregnancy it happened around 20 weeks. I am only 15 weeks now, and will see my doc again next week and will ask him about it then.

But I am just wondering...a few questions that I have....

How many weeks were you when they did your glucose test?

If you have had more then one pregnancy, did you have GD with all of them?

If you had GD with your first pregnancy, did you start changing your diet before being tested for GD with the 2nd pregnancy? What was the outcome?

Did you have any symptoms of GD before you were diagnosed, that you recognized in hindsight?

Also if anyone would love to share a sample day's menu with me, that would be helpful!

I have been doing Weight Watchers for a year and a half plus...

I am used to tracking my food and watching my white carbs, so I am absolutely willing to start doing that again if need be, but it has been SO long since my last pregnancy (DD is 6) and I just don't remember the specifics!

Thanks everyone!
Melissa

Re: Gestational Diabetes Moms! Come In!

This is only my first pg, but I took and failed the test at 28 weeks. I had no symptoms before, but my dr said it may have been linked to my extreme ms. Diet wise I messed up b/c I started healthy, could keep nothing done, I was losing weight no matter what I ate, so I began to eat like crap. After the diagnosis, I had such a fear of insulin, I cut out all carbs. When I met with the endocrinologist I had lost more weight and was having ketone issues. So, they made me add in carbs and put me on insulin (in hind sight, no biggie.) Now my friend had it with both her first, and now has it with her second. Her dr. tested her early the 2nd time around. Technically he told her you can't have gestational diabetes until 20 weeks, so since she tested early this time, she probably has type 2 now.

My first pregnancy I had it at 24 weeks. With subsequent I had it at 16 or 17 weeks. I had two pregnancies since that first, second pregnancy I was borderline, this one I'm a true sugar mama.

I failed the one and three hour during my 25th week.

Did you have any symptoms of GD before you were diagnosed, that you recognized in hindsight? None. Even now I have had no symptoms. If I didn't prick my finger four times a day I wouldn't know I have it at all. The baby is in the 77th percentile as far as weight.

Also if anyone would love to share a sample day's menu with me, that would be helpful!

Breakfast:
Slice of raisin bread with 1-2 tbls Peanut butter
String Cheese

Snack:
1 cup fruit
string cheese
13 Kellogs special k crackers

Lunch:
1 cup veggies
2 slices bread
3 slices cold cut meat
2 slices cheese
tspn mayo
Dannon Light n fit yogurt

Snack:
1 cup fruit
string cheese
20 kellogs special k cracker

Dinner:
1-2 cups veggies
2/3 cup starch so I usually do pasta or brown rice
3 oz meat, but honestly I usually do more than this and my numbers are fine
I'm supposed to do a fruit, but I never do. I'm full with dinner.

Snack:
I'm supposed to do a snack before bedtime because it was my fasting number that did me in. But I don't do the snack. I tried all different things and was never able to get my morning number right. It was always 4 or 5 points to high. They put me on Glyburide and my numbers have been perfect since.

Any further questions, let me know.

I'm going to bump another thread for you that shows the break downs that I was told.

Oh and I'm VERY happy to say that I had a bagel today that I've been craving for like a month. I was scared it would put my numbers too high. I had them scoop the inside, toast it and slather it with cream cheese and my number came in PERFECT! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thank you guys for your responses!

And YAY for bagels!

I love Bagels! During my first pregnancy it was hard NOT to get bagels on the way to work. This time I am a SAHM so I don't go to the bagel shop often. I get the thomas mini bagels instead...so...if I do develop GD, I hope I can continue them!

Thanks for the sample menu!
