Getting glasses
It's official. I can't see squat! Neither me nor my husband have glasses. Do I go to an ophthalmologist or do I go to a Lenscrafters or something like that? I know my insurance covers glasses but do I need to go to an MD to use it or do the places like Lenscrafters accept insurance? Any tips or tricks?

Getting glasses
You're going to have to have an eye exam so they can give you the correct prescriptions. Most LensCrafters and Pearl Visions have doctors on staff. You can make an appointment with them and then go order your glasses. Costco also may have an eye doctor on staff. Just make sure that they're on your plan.

Depending on your insurance but Lenscrafters and Pearle Vision do take insurance. Mine I think allows me to use Lens rafters but not Pearle Vision. But they will do the exam there. Last time I even went to Walmart.

Re: Getting glasses
If you need glasses, then just go to LensCrafters. However, I would go to an ophthalmologist to get extra tests done. I believe they can give you a prescription there, but I’m not sure.

Re: Getting glasses
So vision benefits for glasses are sepetate from your medical. Check with your employer to see if they cover vision and if so, where you have to go. I have to use Visionworks with ours ( they used to be Davis Vision). If you want or need to see an actual MD eye doctor, you'd go through your medical insurance. However, although they can write you a prescription for glasses, my personal medical insurance plan won't cover them for that. If i go to an ophthalmologist it has to be for an issue not for my yearly eye exam since i have separate vision insurance for that. So bottom line check with your insurance plans

Getting glasses
Your ophthalmologist can give you a prescription for glasses when you are there for your yearly eye exam. Otherwise you can go to any Lenscrafters, Pearls, etc and have the optometrist fit you for glasses. I go to an ophthalmologist but I have my optometrist fit me for my contacts/glasses. I have always felt that he does a better job, which my ophthalmologist agrees with which makes sense since that is their job! lol!

Re: Getting glasses
check your insurance.
but a place like lenscrafters will be able to get you started with the prescription for your first set of glasses.
in the past, i've gotten eye exam/glasses from costco, walmart, fancy eye dr's office.

Re: Getting glasses
my opthalmologist does an exam and it goes through my medical insurance, but if I want a refraction (to get a prescription for eyeglasses) it costs extra I think they charge $60. I would then take that prescription to order glasses or contacts. If you go to a lens crafters then they do it all there, if you have vision insurance some or all would be covered.

Getting glasses
I see an ophthalmologist because I have glaucoma. It is covered under my medical insurance but is considered a specialist so I pay a higher co-pay. He will check my vision & then give me a prescription for my eye glasses/contacts & then I can purchase anywhere I would like.
Prior to having glaucoma I would just see an optometrist. They would perform eye exams & vision tests annually & was covered under my companies basic vision benefit.

Re: Getting glasses
I see an ophthalmologist every few years to get my eyes checked and dilated due to recent issues with my blood pressure which is covered by my medical insurance
I have Separate vision at my level local eyeglass place for my eyeglasses.
