Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
I am really ready to get rid of DD's binky but am due in 2 months and am not sure if it is better to get rid of it before the baby of after. Any BTDT advice? What method did you use to get rid of it? TIA!

Re: Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
I just took DD's away. One morning I just wouldn't give it to her. Its been fine, except for the nights. She has only slept through the night 3 times (includng last night ) since we took it away from her last Monday (Apr. 28). She has a hard time falling asleep and now cries before bed (she never did), but if I let her cry it out- she screams for 10-15 minutes, and then is quiet.

Re: Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
I hear that what works is gathering the binkies and sending them to the binky fairy to give to babies who need them....

Re: Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
How old is your daughter?
My dd is over 2 years old and she was "addicted" to hers. She had to have 5 binkies in her crib everytime she napped.
I picked her up at daycare the other day and her teacher said, you know Peyton didn't use her binkie at nap today.
So I said ok let's see how this goes, I didn't give it to her at night. During the day I'd been telling her that binkie's are for babies and you're not a baby anymore and she'd say NOOOO I not a baby. I said ok time to say bye bye to noonie (as she calls it) and she said Yeahhhh.
So that's what we did. She hasn't asked for it since.
When I tell you I was having nightmares about how I was going to get this away from her and it pretty much happened overnight.
Children are funny, when they are ready to do something, they just do it.
Good luck!!
ETA - I'd probably try now BEFORE the baby comes. That way, enough time has past and your dd can't compare the loss of the binkie to the new baby.

Re: Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
Honestly, there is no magic advice except to take it away. Yes, the first few days will be hard, but if you give in then they'll expect that from you and it will make it even harder. Throw them all away so you're not even tempted.

Re: Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
We cut little holes in them and made up a story about a little mouse who would steal them and put a hole in them. She didn't like sucking it with a hole so she gave them up.

Re: Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
We just got rid of it, cold turkey. I would do it now before the baby comes, because if you give the baby a binky, it will be even harder to break the habit since she will steal the baby's. Ryan only really cared for it at bedtime and screamed his head off for 2-3 nights, and then that was it. He would see Erin with it, so we had to limit Erin's use of it, and now, about 3 months after getting rid of it, he has no desire and forgot about how he used to have one. Goodluck!

Re: Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
I used a technique I saw on supernanny.
For a week I explained to Alex how she was becoming a big girl, and would have to give her paci soon to a baby who needs it, because big girls don't use pacis. I explained that there's a paci fairy who you give your paci to, and the fairy takes it to a baby who needs it.
Then, I made a big, pink envelope that said TO: Alex, FROM: Paci Fairy, with lots of dust and stickers inside.
Then, one day, I showed her the envelope and told her the paci fairy had stopped by while she was asleep and told me that a little baby was crying, and needed a paci, and asked that Alex give the fairy her paci because she didn't need it anymore, since she was a big girl.
She got SO excited! We put the paci in the envelope, walked it out to the mailbox and put it in the mailbox.
She cried a little that night, but I just kept to the story about the paci fairy.
Note, we still use the paci for naps, so we have a ritual in our house - she looks in the mailbox to see if the paci fairy gave back her paci for her nappy. But when she wakes up from her nap, she immediately runs over to me, puts her paci in the envelope and we walk it out to the mailbox. She always says proudly, the paci fairy needs my paci!
I know I have to wean her completely but I'm not ready yet to give up on her naps

Re: Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
I tried to get rid of my cold turkey. Yesterday when i came home from work and I hugged DS. I heard some clangning of his binkies in his undershirt. I dig in to get them out and he must have found 2 during the day. As soon as I took them out from "His secret hiding place" he grabbed them from me, popped one in his mouth and took off running with the other in hand

Re: Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
I waited until after my 2nd son was born, since my first son had just transitioned to a regular bed and was 19 months old. So, he was 20 months old when we made a slit in the binky (it was a soothie binky). He su*ked on it and said "broken mommy" tried su*king on it again and said "It not working" I said "that's the only one I have" and went with that for about three days. He ended up pushing it away and dropping it off his bed himself. I also gave my second son a different binky so that he wouldn't be tempted to steal it.

Re: Getting rid of Binky - Advice?
I thought it would be rough, but I couldn't find it one day and just went without it. no problems. When he saw it about 5 days later, he put it in his mouth and took it out uninterested.
