Giving Notice--more than 2 weeks?

I'm starting at a company April 1st and am looking to take off a week or so before, so hopefully ending at my current firm around March 19th. Two weeks before would be March 5th.

I'm currently working on an insane project in Oklahoma City, 70 hour work weeks. I'm miserable and would love to just quit now but just found out that I am switching roles on Monday and going to be running a new process that will take a few months to complete.

I feel bad taking this project on for the next week and a half and THEN giving notice. Should I give 4 weeks notice or is that just not even an option? Isn't 2 weeks just the minimum you have to give? I don't think they would say "pack up your things and go" if I gave 4 weeks notice, but I really don't want to go that long without a paycheck.

Another thing is, how do you usually give notice if you are working out of town? I want to do it in person but in Oklahoma Monday-Friday.

I honestly would give as much notice as possible.

I feel like this is the professional thing to do, especially if they are getting you involved in things that may end up screwing people over when you quit.

When I left my last job, I gave them a month. Many people said that I didn't need to do that, but I didn't want to give them any reason to look at me badly.

It also has worked out in my favor because they still contact me to help out on cases and the extra money is nice to have for work that really does not take me more than 15 hours a month to complete.

It depends on your job. Where I worked if you gave your notice you were asked to leave immediately. No two weeks notice at all. They didn't want you compromising any confidential information.

I would give 2 weeks notice. No need to tell them when you are starting your new job. I have always tried to take a week off between leaving a job and starting a new one.

At my company you are asked to leav immediately but are paid for the notice you are giving.

Thanks all! I decided to give notice this week, telling them I will stay for another 3.5 weeks. They won't ask me to leave early, I have to transfer my open cases to others and that will take some time.

I agree with giving as much notice as you can, as long as it's not the type of thing where you have to then leave immediately.

When I left my law firm job, I gave about 2 months notice. But I had been there 9 years, and I had a lot of responsibility for active cases (one of which was prepping for trial). I would not have felt right leaving with 2 weeks notice, which would have basically screwed over everyone on the team. Giving a lot of notice gave me time to transition out and help train others to step into the roles I was doing there. And it was appreciated by my supervisors. I left on very good terms!

I'm all about giving more notice than 2 weeks when possible. If you know, I would tell them, they might not want to put you on that project and instead have someone else start it and just let you wrap up what you've been doing up til now.
