Glucose Test??
I've been reading that the liquid that they use for the glucose test has lots of chemicals, plus the amount of sugar is crazy (I do remember that from my first pregnancy). Does anybody know of any other alternatives? I've heard about jelly beans and also some type of apple juice. Has anybody heard about those and how effective they are?

Re: Glucose Test??
I think that's the point, for it to have tons of sugar to see how your body handles it... not sure about the chemicals though. Since it's only a one-time thing, you're only drinking 5 ounces & it's not going to harm you, I'd just do it. But if you really want an alternative, I'm sure your ob can tell you if you ask.

Yeah. The whole point of it is that it's sugary. Ive heard of people using an alternative but I think that's very rare. It's fine.
Im sure there's more crap in jelly beans than a bottle of glucola.

The whole point is the sugar. How else would they test your glucose tolerance. 5oz of anything ( other than maybe rat poison) will never harm you. You should see the processed crap I ate while pregnant and DD is healthier than most kids I know.

Re: Glucose Test??
Did you read the ingredient list?
It's actually not that bad: sugar, water, color, flavor, preservative..
essentially Orange soda with no bubbles.
Of course it needs a lot of sugar, it's a sugar tolerance test!

Glucose Test??
I know the sugar is necessary for this kind of test but I've heard the amount is excessive and not a necessity, plus the chemicals are not needed at all and I guess that's what worries me the most. I actually had an app today with one of the drs and asked her about alternatives, of course the dr I saw today was young and didn't really give me any input, grrrrr!!!!

Just curious where you're getting your info from.
Unless you're eating completely clean - nothing processed AT ALL, the amount of chemicals is irrelevant. The amount of sugar in the drink is what's needed to do the test.
My OB is also an MFM who specializes in gestational diabetes. According to him, it's either the drink or be treated as a gestational diabetic - blood testing and diet.

I wouldn't be too worried about the ingredients in the glucose drink. I'm pretty sure that the jelly bean and apple juice alternative you posed is chock full of worse stuff.

There are studies that say ingesting 18 brachs jelly beans gives equally accurate results. Also, fewer side effects for the mom. That's what I will be doing.

I read this on my August babies group, I'll see if I can find the info and post it here. I guess it all depends on what u want to put in ur body? Kinda like processed food, thins like that. Don't get me wrong here and there I eat food that are not really supposed to be good for u, but in case of the glucose test, if I can have the same results with something safer (to a degree), then why not.

To each their own. I just think of all the things that you're likely to consume during your life and your pregnancy, the small bottle of glucola is insignificant.
ETA: and for a test as important as this one, I would want to make sure I was following the test to a T to make sure the results were as accurate as possible.

The reason why I want to do it is because all the women in my family have gotten extreme faint of vomited from the drink and I'd like to avoid that. The jelly bean substitutemakes the risk of that lower. I might also ask if i can do it with organic jelly beans. Btw , a lot of people feel that fruit juice totaling 50 grams of sugar is a good substitute ,but there are no controlled studies so most providers won't allow it. It is worth asking your doctor about though. I know people who have done 16oz of grape juice or oj.

I just asked the girls at the August group and some of them said that it's standard to drink 2 boxes of apple juice and not the other glucose liquid, when I asked her what was her dr's reasoning, she said it's just their standard of practice. Other mommies were mentioning also a fruit juice by Naked Juice, I haven't yet heard anybody mentioning specific studies though

Yes I have a bottle in my fridge and that's basically all it is. FWIW I have to take this test at LEAST three times because my DS was a gigantor baby and they are convinced it's because I had undiagnosed GD the last time. I still don't think its something I need to be overly concerned about.

Glucose Test??
Honestly I would not trust what other moms in a baby group say or other things on the Internet. I would go by what my dr recommends. They are the professionals and you should choose a dr that you trust and if you don't trust them then you should change Drs. Obviously I think you should raise your concerns with your dr and if he or she think that drinking fruit juice is sufficient then go for it!

I had a big baby too, bigger than my dr anticipated, the dr said my DS was gonna be 9.2 lbs and he ended up being 9.9, I think that's the reason why he never descended the way he was supposed to =( I gained a lot of weight with my first pregnancy, and thankfully didn't get GD but now that u said that, I wonder if it went undiagnosed and that's the reason why my DS was so big??
How big was ur DS?

Honestly I just think some people make big babies. DH and I are both big/tall people and both of us were 9 1/2lbs at birth. Regardless of whether or not I have GD I don't think a 6lb baby will ever be in my future. Lol. My DS was 10lb 9oz! I only gained 30lbs with him too so it's not like I put on an excessive amount of weight and they checked his glucose levels every hour while we were in the hospital and he was always in the normal range.

Re: Glucose Test??
Here is an article I read awhile back written by Food Babe on the glucose drink and what's in it. Of course she isn't a doctor and she does make a point to mention that but it's pretty interesting to read...
http://foodbabe.com/2014/05/13/shocking-why-are-doctors-recommending-this-toxic-drink/
I'm with you and not wanting to drink it, she recommends the 28 jelly beans alternative too and there is a great brand they sell at Whole Foods called Surf Sweets that don't have any of those nasty other additives in it. I think I will mention it to my dr as well.

I wouldn't listen to Food Babe either when it comes to pregnancy. She is not a doctor or even a scientitst and she has recently been outed as a hack by someone who actually has a degree in this stuff:

And here is a perspective from another doctor. She's an integrative medicine specialist who trained at Yale. http://avivaromm.com/dont-drink-glucola-gestational-diabetes

I think what she says regarding the precautionary principle is interesting.
