Re: Glucose Test??
Here's the thing... GD is no joke. I didn't even have it when my last pregnancy and my poor baby was poked and prodded incessantly for days in the hospital because he was born a very large weight. After going through the experience I went through, the last thing I want in this world is to do anything that may skew the results and lead me to have undiagnosed GD. I will drink the chemical laden drink 15 times if that is the best way to get an accurate result.

Re: Glucose Test??
My question is this- in all the years they have been administering this test and using this glucose drink, is there any documented cases of it harming the babies? That is what I would like to know.

I don't know the answer to that question, but I don't believe the test was given as a matter of routine until more recently. I was born in 1984 and my mom did not have it. Dh was born in 1976 and his mom didn't have it either. Interesting how times change.

Re: Glucose Test??
The chemical in it is glucose, that's sugar, and it's highly concentrated to see how your body reacts to it. I've heard in other countries and outside of long island if you have a real new-agey midwife they MIGHT let you use honey mixed with juice, but again, it's going to be the same amount of sugar... because that's the point... they need to see how your body is reacting to sugars.

My mom had me in '83 and my sister in '85 and she took it.

I was diagnosed with GD when pregnant with my now 13m old. I worked hard to make sure she was born healthy and luckily she was. I don't even want to imagine what would have happened if there was something wrong with her b/c I didn't take the test the way it was meant to be taken.

And that is my point. I want to know how many babies have actually been harmed by this glucose drink vs how many babies have been harmed by undiagnosed GD. I am quite sure the numbers will show that the benefit of drinking the glucose drink far outweigh the risks.

And back in '80, my aunt didn't take it, and lost her daughter at 8 & 1/2 months pregnant, stillborn, to GD. I'd MUCH rather take the test and drink then lose my baby.

Re: Glucose Test??
I posted the Food babe article earlier bc someone had posted it on fb today and I figured I would share since I know the original poster was concerned with the ingredients. I did say she WAS NOT a doctor. Some people I know literally threw up after they had to drink it, so it would be nice if there were alternative options they can offer if the drink makes you sick or the patient would rather not drink it opposed to the other options. I drank it with all three of my other pregnancies and my kids are fine! I am not saying it will harm your baby, it won't. I 100% agree that it is very important to take the test to make sure you do not have GD, I don't think anyone should opt out of the test bc of the drink, but I like how some people are saying it is a chemical laden drink, my point is WHY does it have to be full of chemicals?? I am someone who eats mostly all organic, uses organic personal care products and so on, so it does bother me a little, but I will probably just drink it and move on.

Glucose Test??
There is a study about using jelly beans. You also can use juice. The sugar amount will be the same as in the glucola drink. IIRC, the 1 hour test is 50g of sugar and I drank 2 juice boxes with 25g sugar each.

Re: Glucose Test??
Just to put it into perspective.... The purpose of the test is to make sure your body if functioning properly during your pregnancy for the health and safety of the baby.
I think drinking a glucose drink that millions of pregnant women drink and will accurately determine if you have GD or not is less of a risk than having undiagnosed GD.
(Having had GD twice with 2 pregnancies, Dr's take it very seriously).
I hope I don't sound snarky, I definitely do not mean to, just knowing how seriously they take GD and how much it can affect the babies health if it is not managed, I wouldn't take the risk of alternative methods to diagnose.

Re: Glucose Test??
At the end of the day, the most important thing is a healthy mom and baby. If you still have your doubts and feel strongly enough, just discuss it with your OB. I'm sure they will weigh the pros and cons with you but whatever you do, don't skip the test.

Re: Glucose Test??
I wouldn't not take it bc you don't want to consume too much sugar. It's one time and probably no more sugar than a few glasses of coke (minus chemicals and caffeine). If you have a medical issue like reactive hypoglycemia you can do a fasting and A1C blood draw then eat and go back 2 hrs later for another blood test. The drink would cause someone with reactive hypoglycemia to have verily low and inaccurate blood sugar levels so it needs to be done an alternate way.

Re: Glucose Test??
Thank u so much for all ur advise, pros and cons, I really appreciate them The sugar concerned me but most importantly the chemicals. I wanted to explore alternatives that were just as effective or better but I really think I'm just gonna stick with the glucose drink. Thank u again!

Re: Glucose Test??
I am not drinking the glucose drink either and for the same reason of the concerns you have. I am actually doing my test this afternoon. My midwife gave me the option of one medium banana and two slices of plain bread/toast or 6 ounces of grape juice and one slice of bread. I am doing the banana and bread as I don't like grape juice.
