Gluten Free Diet?

Anyone try this for thier child? Did it help with behavior? My niece was diagnosed with high function autism and it was recommended that they try this. My Sil and Brother have heard mixed reviews on if it was effective.

TIA

i know my sitter was trying it with her son & dairy was his 'trigger'. she's still trying not to give him gluten, but she's 100% avoiding dairy...

she claims it helped, but i didn't see a difference (though, obviously, i'm not with him all day)...

How can you tell what their "trigger" is?

she cut out EVERYTHING for about 2 weeks. Then she would add 1 thing back in slowly (it was a long process) and see if he reacted. in his case, he was VERY hyperactive, uncontrolable, etc.

she added back in gluten and he was no different, then she gave him milk and he was bouncing off the walls....so he barely gets any dairy now...

Re: Gluten Free Diet?

my SIL had to do this with my nephew from age 2-3 and there was a huge difference. he also received some extra 'at home' help. i believe the combination of the EI & diet made all the difference. he'll be entering 1st grade in the fall and you'd never know he had any trouble.

Thank you. She gets some services but she is out of state and school age so things are different. Hopefully going gluten free will make a difference for them. She just eats pasta all the time so they are worried she won't eat , especially since she lost 10 lbs from the meds she is on. Iappreciatee the info though and will pass it along.

Re: Gluten Free Diet?

I know someone who cut gluten and dairy for their school aged child and noticed a difference in the child's behavior. You can get rice pasta and other GF pasta that taste pretty good.
