Go fund me
What is your opinion about this?
I know people use it for good things, and I have given this way before, but there's a girl on my FB page I know from HS that I feel every other day she is posting something she is raising money for....and it's usually to fund herself or her kids.
I don't think she is in a great place financially but something about going about it this way rubs me the wrong way.
What do you think?
Are you skeptical too ever?

Go fund me
Unless it's for an illness and even then I'm slightly turned off, I find the whole asking for money bit tacky. I had one girl who wanted a car. B!tch, get a job, don't aks people for money.

I think this is why is rubs me the wrong way. Again, I know she is in not a great place, but her most recent asking for her disabled son, I feel as a social worker, many things are already covered by resources in the community if she does her research.
She also recently posted asking for $25k to rebuild her savings....
DH had a bad year in business a few years ago and we drained our savings too and I didn't start a fundraiser asking to build it back up.

Re: Go fund me
I feel it gets abused. The last time I was sent a link about someone I know and it was to raise money for home renovations. I didn't donate anything.

Go fund me
For cars and to "rebuild savings"!?!?!?! That's beyond ballsy! I would never donate to those "causes". For an illness or other tragedy (like a fire or something)- maybe, even probably, but not for anything else

I can't imagine that anyone would even donate but it irritates me that people would even put it out there to ask.

Re: Go fund me
it depends. but that's why i like the site and other like it. oyu can choose who your money goes to directly, not some big general fund.
im a teacher, and a former student needed surgery and was on there.
ive seen students raising money for various things and i like to support that as well.

Re: Go fund me
I think these things have created a strange sense of entitlement in people.
Of course I am happy to donate to some legitimate causes, but I have seen so many things that make my eyes roll. Asking for donations for cosmetic dental work, breast implants, a new car, vacations, etc.
Its easy enough to ignore these things but I just feel like people have no tact sometimes.

I also honestly think it makes you look like a crazy person if you are always posting for this....even if you genuinely link up to a good cause in the mix of it all.
You lack credibility in my eyes at that point.

Go fund me
I've seen some real tacky ones the last few mos. One was to raise $ so she could get $ for a new apartment (ummm..... Get a job). Another was they had water damage and wanted money to meet their deductible!!! The nerve!!!!
Shit, and if that's the norm, I'm gonna set up a page requesting $ to help pay off my student loans i still have 15 yrs later.

Go fund me
A guy I am friends with on Facebook started one so he could go to another state to get training for a job. I don't understand how people have the balls to ask for money for something like that.

if she does it all the time I would be skeptical.
I was very sick and needed $$ help but never asked for help not even from my family, so many people have fund raisers for everything (not saying its wrong)
I should start one called "baby fund' interestingly enough my RE's office suggested it, because I need more $$ so I can continue trying because at this time Im out of the game. I thought about it and almost tempted but don't have the guts to do it....

Go fund me
On a FB group I'm in, which is full of strangers, someone posted a link to their page to raise money for funeral expenses. It rubbed me the wrong way b/c she was asking complete strangers.

Go fund me
I think there is a place for a foundation or a bank account to be set up for a person for an illness, hardship. etc. The problem with GoFundMe is that people get to set it up themselves. Sometimes, it's for the wrong reason, and the website, which probably started out with good intentions has suffered a blow to their credibility and positivity. I can't believe some of the gofundme requests I've seen. And I heard about the guy who set one up as a joke to make Macaroni and Cheese or something like that? He ended up getting hundreds of thousands of donations? Ok it ended up going to a charity because the guy was nice, but what if he wasn't?

I have seen a few of those but I am less skeptical because I know that stuff is not usually covered by insurance. I also have seen for adoptions which I know can cost thousands and thousands OOP.

Yeah that's tacky too.
As an aside, I also think it's different if say, people other than the person going through the situation set up a site. Many are super humble and would never think of asking people for money.
I actually have donated this way as a result.

yes, both are costly and adoption is my other choice

Me too.
I donated to & helped share one (from a similar site) that was for a friend for medical expenses. Most people who donated knew her and were either friends with her or were friends of friends (from FB) but knew her from HS or college.
I know she needed the help, but I wasn't surprised we didn't reach the goal.
Even though the person who started it for her went into detail about her situation, I think people think-a) she isn't dying, b) she has a job, c) she has insurance, d) there are more tragic or more wide reaching causes to donate to.

Go fund me
I donated to one after reading about it in my local paper. It was to help a 30 year old who had a debilitating illness that she will die of and no family. A friend started it unknown to her and raised about $8,000. It is such a sad story as there is no hope for her.

I'm not against the site per se. Some are worthy causes, but others just show how greedy some people can be. The bottom line is, I judge the person and not the site.
