Go fund me

I'm not for it or against it. Some of them are legit and others I roll my eyes at. But be grateful they you never need to ask strangers for money to bury a loved one.

Re: Go fund me

I used Gofundme.com to raise money for NEDA, an eating disorder awareness initiative while I was training for my first half ironman this summer. I wanted to be kept accountable for my training while giving back to a charity that helped me so much while I was suffering from eating disorders in the past. Unlike other charities where you can donate directly to the charity in honor of the person fundraising, I had to go through Gofundme.com because NEDA did not have a fundraising site.

Nobody would know if I donated the money or not so it did feel sort of weird asking people to contribute. I didn't ask donations from anyone I didn't know though and I can see how it can be weird donating to a stranger. For me, my donors trusted me and knew how strongly I felt about the organization so it worked for me.

I sort of wish gofundme.com made it a requirement to have the donation checks cut to the specific organization benefited. For me, I had to have the money transferred to my bank account and then I made the direct donation to NEDA.

The new age pan handling.....

In all seriousness, If they are for an illness or charity, I am fine with it. Anything outside of that, I roll my eyes.

Re: Go fund me

I'd say I do a fair amount of donations through GoFundMe to those with illnesses, lost loved ones, etc..

I can't say I've come across any frivolous requests/donation pages, but I'm usually directed to the fund raisers through other individuals or media outlets (news, etc..)

And yeah, I'm always skeptical too...but it doesn't stop me. Chat Icon
