Godparent Question: Is 16 too young to be a god mother?

Ok, so here is some background: We have a godfather (DH's good friend), but we need a godmother, and I'd like it to be family.

We have 4 sisters between us, my sister is out b/c she is a Buddist and my SIL is wiccin (No, I am not kidding and you all know who I am refering to ).

DH has two little sisters, one is 16 (will be 17 in March) and one who is 13. Both go to church and who are religious. I would love to pick the 16 year old to be DS' godmother, but I don't know if she is too young (my mom and my cousin were godmothers at that age though).

What do you guys think? My back up (my best friend) just moved to Italy, so that makes it a little tougher too....

I don't think so...if the person you pick is going to be a good role model, provide religious support, and will be involved in the childs' life...why not?

our church has a min age of 18

I don't think so. I plan on asking my nephew who is 14 to be our next baby's godfather. I think it depends on the individual. I would never just choose someone for the sake of them being family or had morals I didn't agree with. I think it would give her a great sense of honor and pride, and install a sense of responsibility.

My friend is doing the same thing. She has some issues with her SIL's
... so she is picking her niece who is 16 as well.

My view is that she's only 16 for one year and when your child is old enough to understand religious guidance, she'll be older.

But you'll have to see if your church allows it.

I became a Godmother at the age of 12. My aunt had to ask permission at the church, but obviously they were fine with it. I was a Catholic school student at the time, so maybe that swayed their decision!

Luciano's GOdmother was 18 when he was baptized.
and she's the granddaughter of MY Godmother. so that meant more than anything to me.


I also know someone who is 14 1/2, and will be a Godmother this weekend, to her brother's child.

I would DEF do it, if this is someone that wil be part of your child's life.
Its actually great that theyre younger because they will be so much closer in age, and will grow up and have eachother for many years.

Not at all. My sister is my sons godmother and she is 15. At my church, they had to have received confirmation, so she was old enough.

As long as she has recieved her sacraments, she can be a Godmother

I t hink that age is fine. I would go for it. I think as long as they have made their confirmation, they should be ok in the Church's eyes.

My brother and my cousin are my ggod parents. They were 13 and 14 when I was born.

I don't think so. I was 17 when I became my nephew's godmother.

I was a Godmother to my cousin at 16. You just need to be confirmed. I say go for it!
