Godparent Question spin off-Do Jewish people do Godparents?
I don't have godparents, but DH is my niece's Godfather. Does anyone know? I know it is not the same significance as in Christianity.

Re: Godparent Question spin off-Do Jewish people do Godparents?
My mom told me that they used to do godparents only for boy babies and first born at that (quite sexist and old fashioned if you ask me) - then again that may not be true to Jewish law. There are 3 girls in my family and none of us had godparents - but I think if you want to have them you should - as a special person in their life, minus the religious piece.

IDk. I am not Jewish, however, at all of my cousins' (4 of them) bris/baby naming, relatives were named as Godparents. They made a promise in front of all the guests to help raise the child & make sure he/she attends Hebrew school when the time comes. FTR, I am a Catholic Godmother for my jewish cousin

nope, unless the families have adopted the tradition from the culture around them.
Jewish people can't buy things for baby before its born either. I know its not Jewish law, but our families treat it as such.
I feel like I'm a kid and its Christmas again, and I can't have a tree.

Re: Godparent Question spin off-Do Jewish people do Godparents?
i dont have godparents, but DH does. We are planning on having godparents and they will be part of the Bris. According to the mohel he said Jews don't have godparents like catholics do. there is no real responsibility to the godparents. but he said if we want them it wont hurt. we're just having them cause my sister really wants to be the godmother. lol

I don't think it is standard to have Godparents.
