Re: Good German Restaurants on Long Island?

as a german I must declare I've never been in a decent german restaurant outside of germany Chat Icon

I think its partially becuase stereotypical german is heavy bavarian food, and I'm accustomed to much lighter northern fare....

but 'german food' in the US is much like 'italian food' or 'chinese food'... much heavier than what the natives would actually consume.

Mary, not sure where you are, but in Lindenhurst, Herb Lorch (who owns Black Forest bakery) opened a German restaurant called The Village Lantern. They have excellent German food & are reasonable. The decor is very nice as well. We were just there on Sunday (celebrating Valentine's Day early).

Two thumbs up!!!!

Victor Koenig's in Floral Park is amazing!

It certainly is great. I had my wedding there and the people raved about the food. FYI-the sauerbraten and yager schnitzel are DH's favorites. Website is koenigsrestaurant.com

Is it the Bavarian Inn?

The Bavarian Inn, which was right on Lake Ronkonkoma is closed..... Chat Icon There's a For Sale sign on the property. They were flooded out when the lake levels rose, so the current building is unusable..... Chat Icon

I hear that Zum Stammtisch in Queens is amazing - we are dying to try it.

This place is fantastic. We go a few times a year.

I am not a german food fan but the rest of my family is. We go there at least once a year.

I didn't realize that this was moved.

We're in western Nassau, but depending on the weather we'd go that far. He LOVES Zum Stammtisch, but doesn't want to drive to Queens.

Thanks so much for this suggestion, I'm going to tell him!
