Water District Issues Boil Water Alert
After fecal bacteria was found in an isolated well 16 on Commack Road, the Greenlawn Water District has advised residents to boil water until flush of system is complete.

The Greenlawn Water District has issued a boil water alert for the Commack community after discovering fecal-bacteria in well 16, on Commack Road. The well is now shut off and they are flushing the system. Residents are advised to boil water for consumption and use antibacterial soap when washing hands until the district completes the system flush.
Between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday, the Greenlawn Water District discovered a non-fecal bacteria in a routine water sample around the district. When they tested the running wells, they discovered that well 16 had a fecal bacteria.
"We do routine checks of the water system in the area, including the wells, and today a non-fecal bacteria came up in the system. When we checked the well, Well 16 on Commack Road, it had a fecal bacteria. We shut that well between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. and are currently chlorinating the system. We should be able to flush it by Saturday," Frank DeMayo, crew leader said.
Well 16 affects the South Greenlawn, Laurel Hill, Commack and South Elwood communities.
"There is no detection of e. coli in the wells, but it is being cholorinated until the Board of Health determines that the system is safe," DeMayo said.
Many of workers at district are also firemen, according to DeMayo, and have coordinated with local fire departments to get fresh, bottled water to the communities.
"If you want, you can pick up a case of bottled water to drink until this clears from the Fire Departments," he said.
The water district will be updating their website and mailing information to customers in the area. DeMayo said residents should check the website if they have additional concerns.
