Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
I feel like $hit about it but I get sick EVERY TIME I take them. I even switched to children's vitamins and STILL got sick.
I throw it up every time and stay sick for hours after.
So, I think I have just given up. I haven't taken them in about 3 weeks...
I made a list of foods that contain the folate etc and everything else and I try REALLY hard to get enough in me from food.
I feel guilty but at the same time I want to listen to my body and it seems to be rejecting them...
Some people (my mom esp.) are HORRIFIED at this and other people think it's no biggie and cite the fact that 30 yrs ago there were no prenatals and even today in other countries (ones that are modern like the US) people still are not prescribed them...
Ugh idk what to do!!

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
you really should talk to your doctor. prenatals are pretty important to take. i wouldn't be skipping them. maybe he can try different pills, or come up with a diet to help you out.
can you take them right before bed? that's what i do because vitamins make me very ill. i have been doing this with my vitamins for years now and have no problems because my stomach is full from eating and i go right to sleep.
unfortunately pregnancy isn't always easy. but we have to do what's best for our babies, IMO.

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
Maybe try an organic blend. I use a whole food vitamin made by "New Chapter". Not only have they been great on my sensitive stomach....they also didn't cause constipation the way that other vitamins will do. Good Luck. Worst case scenario, maybe you can get a straight folic acid/B complex pill or liquid supplement. You need lots of other mineral too though. And unless you're diet is superbly pure and whole, you probably won't get them. 30 years ago they didn't have processed food the way we do now. Metabolic absorption of nutrients was possible with the food supply. Today...not so much, unless you go the extra mile. Feel Better,....

my doctor told me I could go off of them while I had M/S. I still took flinstones though.
ETA: I took them at night, right before I fell asleep.

I was the same way during the 1st trimester...sick constantly--so I took Flintstones. Doctor told me the amount of folic acid was similar, and that's what I really needed. Now that I'm in my 3rd trimester, MS had made a much more subtle return, and on nights I feel queasy, I skip the vitamins.

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
My dr. told me I could stop taking them around 8 weeks b/c my MS was so bad. I stayed on them though during the 2nd and now 3rd trimester I only take them a few times a week. They are not really for the baby...the baby takes all the vitamins it needs from you. The vitamins are mostly for you.

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
maybe you should just try taking a b-12 or folate supplement. thats the most important right now.
i used to take b vitamins from Shaklee that were great. they were coated in folate i believe and i have a sensitive tummy and they never bothered me.

this is exactly what my doctor said....I think it's good that you are actually looking at what foods will help you while you are off vitamins ( I didn't haha)

Yes, I agree that there are a lot of annoying things about pregnancy that we muddle through because it is good for the baby but imo it's not good for the baby if everyday I take a vitamin, wretch it up, and then stay nauseous/ vomitting for hours and therefore dehydrate myself. I mean, in the end the baby isn't even getting the vitamin since I threw it up in the first place... If I could keep the vitamin down and just be a little queasy I think it would be a different story...
It is def worth a try to pick up some different brands as some of you suggested.
Part of not taking it is just me not wanting to fight my body. I feel like if I am naturally rejecting these vitamins (or at least mosty in their synthetic forms) maybe there is a reason... Kind of like how we are not supposed to neglect certain cravings as they may be signs of deficiencies.

please don't read into things--there was nothing cold intended by it. my point is that pregnancy can be very uncomfortable and hard at times and can put us through a lot physically and mentally. like i said above, she should talk to her OB about what the best course of action is for HER.
we do what we have to do for our babies--some of us throw up, some are on bed rest, some get swollen, etc but all in all we do what we can to get healthy and happy babies.

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
You would be surprised at how many girls didnt take pre-natals. Not because they didn't want to but becasuse they weren't able to. Of course we all do what is best for our babies, that is a no brainer!
I couldnt take them because I had hyperemisis and couldn't even sip water. Not once was my OB concerned about it. Keep yourself hydrated, make smart food choices and if and when you think you can tolerate a vitamin, take a flintstone chewable.
Feel better!

aww don't be so hard on her
I understand what she means, I often talk in context of myself and never expect that it may be interpreted as a critique.
I force down those yucky stinky vitamins and I suffer for my MS and I'm proud of myself when I hold them down, but thinking of my baby really helps me through it, but only like 50% ... the rest of the strength I get from zofran.
Def talk to your doctor, they may have some tips for you or may have you try different vitamins, or maybe even get some nausea meds.

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
My OB told me not to take the prenatals when I was really sick. He told me the most important thing was to just take the folic acid pills which do not cause nausea. When my nausea eased up I went on a prenatal. The first one I tried made me sick. Once I found Citranatal Assure I was much better.

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
I haven't been taking mine either. I take Flintstone vitamins when I remember. I take extra folic acid because there isn't enough in the Flintstone vitamins. ANd now I take an iron pill on top of it. Became very anemic over the past few weeks. When I can't stomach a vitamin, I make sure I take the folic acid....And I too was told my many in the health profession that the vitamins aren't for the baby. I never took them before I got pregnant and I may continue after he arrives..

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
I Wasn't taking mine and the dr told me that was fine untill 16-17 weeks. I actually got Childrens Gummy ones and they seemed to be fine. I just went to the Dr the other day and everytime I think of taking my other vitamins it makes me sick so she gave me a chewable one.

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
Try Flintstones or Gummy Vitamins - something comprehensive with folic acid.
I rotate between my normal pre-natal (Duet DHA) and Flintstones and my doctor is fine with it.
She also stresses eating a healthy diet, b/c it is best for you and the baby to get vitamins from food.

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
i'm no dr, but you should definitely be taking vitamins.
my m/s was so bad i was vomiting the pre-natals no matter what time i took them - so i got the chewable gummy bear vitamins AND took a vitamin B/folic acid tablet that goes under the tongue and dissolves. I took them around 7:30-8pm, so I'd still be sitting upright for a couple hours. I found that if i took them right before bed, I'd lay down and then they'd come right up.
eta: link to the vitamin B/folic acid dissolving tabs FTR, vitamin B has shown to help m/s too.

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
I took them for 3 months prior to BFP then for about 2.5 while pregnant. They made me sick. The Flinstones made me sick as well. The only thing I can take are the Gummies, docs are ok with that.

Re: Guilty to admit that I'm NOT taking prenatal vits...
I've been taking Flintstones with an extra folic acid because the Flintstones are chewable and the folic acid pills are small. I'm also taking chewable calcium as well. I have a very strong gag reflex these days and I literally threw up one day taking my vitamins.
I would honestly just talk to your OB. Maybe there can be a good solution for you. I'm sorry they're making you sick
