My salon just opened their phone up to take appointments today - I am on a waiting list. I would call now, people want to get their hair done.
I wish I could get a pedicure but, nails aren't phase 2.
Wait, hair IS phase 2 but nails ISN'T?? How?? Why?? And WHY???
I don't get that either. My friend in Texas goes to a nail salon and the way it's set up now it's way safer than a hair salon can ever be.

Hair salons opening
Thanks everyone- I made my appointment for next weekend! I’ll be good for another 2-3 months after this so I won’t have to go for awhile.

I questioned the same thing. Like I said before, these phases are out of wack. Probably planned by a man

I would stay FAR away for a few months.... the second wave is going to hit much sooner than expected IMO. I plan to wait.
I'm with you. I'd much rather look like a beast than risk having a stranger in my face for 30 minutes plus cutting my hair.

I can’t wait for eyebrow threading and wax places to open. Everything else I got locked down already, lol.
Oh and barbershops for my son.
ETA: to the original poster, heck yea make that appointment.
I got an email from the laser place I used to go to and they said they are opening June 16, "as long as the state allows it" I have no idea where they got that date from. If we (Westchester) start phase 2 next week, it will still be phase 2 on the 16th & that doesn't include waxing, and I think lasers is in there with waxing.
I don't care-- I leave me eyebrows to their own devices & I had to stop the laser due to an allergic reaction, it's just odd.

Yep and in FL they opened nail salons right away. It is ridiculous the way he has set up these phases.

Everyone is being cautious in their salons with masks and disinfecting. Many of us will be going back to work and getting tired of going out with 2-3 inches of gray hair and some really need haircuts (one thing I am grateful for that I don't need that too).

Yep. All the stylists at my salon have to wear a mask and face shield and will be teated every 2 weeks. All customers have to wear a mask too. No waiting in the lobby, only every other chair being used, etc... A lot of precautions have been set in place.

The best part of this for me is that there is no forced small talk! When I get my haircut I just want to sit quietly for 45 minutes, but most hairdressers yap nonstop

This is the first thing I'm getting done! Second will be a proper mani/pedi with a leg massage!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!
Haircut is last on my list. I haven't been since 12/21 and I do my own roots with the touch up kits.

Ok. You all can go get your hair done and I’m not. The OP asked WWYD, so that is what I will be doing. I personally have zero desire to take a risk for appearance sake, nor can I envision how they’ll be able to cut hair well around the face if the client is wearing a mask.
And I just have to say - I think we all get it Nell. You have very loudly stated you think this whole thing was a crock and overreaction from the get go. So go and get your roots done.

Already done My friend works out of her home and did it this weekend since as everyone stated there will be crazy long waiting lists for appointments. Apparently I am not the only one ready to come out and get my roots done. And for the record, I never said it was a crock. But i also can't hide at home forever. I even have to go back to the office at some point of phase 2. Crazy, I know. You are free to do what you want of though. That's the beauty of free will. No need to get so defensive.

Same.. I’m actually going to miss having my stylist come to my house when the Salons re-open. But I know this must be hard for her to be traveling to do hair.
People want to act like only they are doing the right thing, staying home locked away while turning their nose up at people who are ready to move on to the next chapter and reopen. But guess what the economy & these business owners very much need people like us. My stylist is still waiting for unemployment. So what is she suppose to do when she has been making freaking $0 since March?? Starve herself and her whole family? She can’t even get a hold of anyone to get her money. It’s such a joke at this point.
I get it, people don’t want to take a risk and want to stay inside. No one cares, Do you boo! But the snide remarks and the I’m such a martyr attitude is old already!

No kidding you didn't say it was a crock. You know I mean that you acted AS IF it was a crock. That people were overreacting and needed therapy because they were preparing and worried. You and others have been condescending. YOU are the ones "turning your noses up" at those who are worried and exercising caution.
Even your response now is condescending. I understand the concept of free will. I never said people shouldn't go to the hair salon if they are comfortable and it is allowed. I answered a WWYD about MYSELF.
Glad you got your roots done. I hope you are feeling better now.

Why is it ok for you and others to say "I would stay FAR away", but someone else cannot make a reassuring comment about why it's probably not too risky to go? Obviously the OP WANTS to go.
Nothing that was said in the entire thread of comments you quoted was even remotely condescending.

Re: Hair salons opening
I actually got my hair done the night before the shut down. Looking back it was probably a lot more dangerous then. I won't be calling for an appointment right away - not because I'm worried about anything. My hair isn't all that bad and there are a lot more people than I who really NEED it.
However, if I was able to get a pedicure, I'd be all over it. I can deal with no manicure, but my feet - ugh! I will not wear flip-flops or sandals until that situation is taken care of!

Because it was a "WWYD" question, and I said what *I* would do. I do not need to be told that it's not too risky to go, bc that's an opinion -unless you are an infectious disease expert or epidemiologist? which I really doubt.
I also don't need to be told what the concept of free will means. That was condescending to me.
My response is also based on many months of posts by Nell and others which have been ridiculing and pathologizing posters who have said they are worried and extra cautious.

Re: Hair salons opening
There HAVE been lots of personal attacks on people who chose to take this seriously. It's kind of sad when people are so ugly and insecure on the inside that they have to resport to childish bullying and baseless personal attacks while ostensibly discussing public issues.
I tend to pity people who can't engage in adult conversation without whining and hissing at others or calling them names or trying to (mis)state personal facts about them. But I don't let them silence me when I have the time and inclination to speak--not in real life and not on here.
But I am afraid that too many smart, strong voices have been silenced by the attacks. ... Or maybe just not worthwhile to engage when it's like that.

We are down to 1% positive on LI. How much longer do you want to wait? This is probably the second wave now since it seems everyone had it in December, January and February and didn't know and the antibody testing doesn't go back that far.
There is no definitive proof that anyone had it back in December in the United States, and very very limited evidence to suggest anyone had it abroad that far back. I personally would not treat this as the second wave, OR, if I did, I would certainly think that we are in for more than 3 waves as seen by the Flu of 1918.

Re: Hair salons opening
I think we will all see if there is a spike in the next 2 weeks from all these protests. If not, then maybe we WERE all fooled that it wasn't as bad as they made it out to be. Yes people died and it is horrible but maybe it was safe enough for most everyone else since it has already been proven that the majority of people who contract it are NOT essential workers.

Exactly. Today is the 11th day of protests. I think if we were going to see a rise, we'd be seeing it by now. It doesn't take 14 full days to show symptoms, it can take up to 14 days. Most people would be showing symptoms around the 5th day.
I'm waiting to see if more news outlets start reporting the same, but I just saw the one news network is saying that a scientist from the WHO is reporting that asymptomatic transmission of COVID is very rare. I didn't have a chance to research it yet. Wondering how true that is.
