Half Marathon

Hey Girls,

I would like to run a half marathon in a couple of months. I am capable of running 3 miles (I pretty much run the whole 3 miles).

Does anyone have any suggestions/schedule that you would like to share about how you prepped for a half marathon.

Anything would be great. I am currenlty running at a gym on a treadmill.

Thank you!

Re: Half Marathon

Do you have a race picked out?

The best way to train is to work backwards from your race date. There are a lot of training plans online that will get you to the finish line - Hal Higdon is very popular with beginners, and I believe his HM programs are 12 weeks (3 months).

In the meantime, start doing some outdoor runs and also keep working on building your base. I personally didn't do a half until I had been running for 2 years, but that's not to say that you can't do it. I got injured last year with a steep jump in mileage (training for a full), so I just always warn everyone to take it slow!! Chat Icon

Re: Half Marathon

i looked at all the training plans out there and made up my own plan based on what worked for my life... trained for it in only 9 weeks. hal hidgon is a popular one for beginners. I agree with the previous poster about increasing mileage too quickly, only increase 10% each week. Good luck!

Re: Half Marathon

there's 11 weeks until LI half. It's a nice, friendly, flat course.

I think you can totally do a half if you are running 3 miles steadily, 3-4 times a week.

I do what Julie does and I make up my own training schedule based on a few plans. I don't think you can go wrong with Hal Higdon though.

Otherwise there is the Hamptons Half marathon in September, Queens and Bronx are over the summer and the Diva half is in October. All obtainable!
