Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
I ask because DH and I were have a discussion about it this morning. I wanted to get the kids out to a bounce place because they are going stir crazy. I should add one of my kids just finished amoxicillin for step and his brother is on day 5 of the meds (2 out of 3 of my kids got strep within a week).
Anyhow when I suggested we go out, DH said to me are you nuts? With flu going around? It didn’t even cross my mind. My kids go to school. I get this is different. Just wondering what others are doing (not going out) if anything at all.
On a side note, I was listening to the radio and a dr. came on and said with Super Bowl parties, do not take anything from shared bowls-chips, dip, etc. because the flu is so bad this year!

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
During the winter months I generally don’t take DS to any open play places. He goes to school that’s enoigh germs for me lol.
I am also 8 months pregnant so I am extra cautious this winter with germs.

All those kid places are just giant petri dishes full of germs. Everytime we have gone, someone gets sick.

Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
I've spent half of January and now the start of February home with sick kids. We were supposed to go to the aquarium this weekend and I was dreading being inside a petri dish like that. My kids are still sick so we're stuck home anyway. We visited the library once and I was definitely anxious about all the germs but I sucked it up.
I can't wait for my 5yo to get back to school Monday but I'm nervous about all the people who will be sick next week bc of sick people that won't stay home from super bowl parties.

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
We’ve been using common sense.. not going to places like museums, open play places (except for birthday parties), and generally staying in a lot because frankly, what else is there to do this time of year? My DS got the flu two years in a row and when he gets sick, he gets VERRRRRY sick with very high fevers. Last year the flu landed him at the ER. I’m also pregnant. I feel like nothing we can do is THAT important that it’s worth doing and potentially getting sick, but that said, we are tying not to be crazy and we go to restaurants and stores, and have friends over, and my DS goes to school where I know the flu and strep are going around currently in his classroom. Stuff like going on the LIRR and to the museum of natural history (something my DS has been asking to do..... )and going to the Please Toch museum... is going to be put off till the spring.
My doctor said the very best thing you can do (better than the shot) is to wash your hands frequently, especially as soon as you get home so you’re not bringing outside germs in. We also always wash our hands before eating, and we don’t touch our face.

Nope, I stay indoors because I hate the cold. But if I want to go out, I do otherwise I would be more miserable than I already am since I loathe winter with a fierce passion.

Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
I definitely have been rethinking where we go. We did go to NYC last weekend and saw a show...but I drove instead of taking the train and subway and we practically bathed in alcohol wipes lol. We aren't hitting our usual places, like bowling, etc. We are set to fly to California in a couple of weeks, and I might cancel the trip.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
I am a germaphobe to the MAX (I am emetaphobic) so I have to force myself not to get into that mentality because I tend to spiral. The only place I have avoided is LICM for now. I want to take DS to see the dinosaur exhibit but will hold off. We are going to Disney for February break (DS's first time) and that is sending me over the edge because I don't want his first time at Disney World to be ruined because of illness.

Same here! I'd love to take DS somewhere to get some energy out, but with all my other health issues, I shouldn't risk getting sick while PG. DS goes to a learning program during the week and that's risky enough.

This. I do feel kids need to be exposed to germs and you need to Make sure they wash their hands. We still go out but it’s limited due to the cold.

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
Nope. I live my life. I went to the city the other day on the train. I always use common sense with hand washing etc all year round. I also make sure my immune system is in top shape with my supplements and tons of rest. I haven't been sick all winter and I've been everywhere. Dd is in school all day...that to me is the biggest "petri dish" out there... but we can't avoid that.
If I get sick I get sick. Its not Ebola...I am not going to quarantine myself over it .

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
Thanks!!
A haven’t even been counting down to my due date, I’ve just had a running countdown to the end of this winter and obsessively checking flu prevalence charts for NYS

Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
While I live my life and certainly wouldn't be a shut in, if I had a kid no way in hell would I be taking them to a bounce house or any type of open play right now! Especially if they are just getting over being sick, that's just nuts!

I do want to point out, that while we keep hearing the media talking about how many pediatric deaths there have been this year....last year there were over 100. I just looked that up on the CDC site. So while I hate using the word "hype" over someone dying...I think the media is really latching onto this

We’ve been living life as we normally would. Dd has been sick from school and the baby now has a cold. Been trying to wash hands and change clothes as soon as we get home but honestly that’s the only thing to do.

Nope...we just live normally. Granted we don’t really go to bounce places anyway, we still go to school, library, restaurants, shopping.

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
We have been. But I think only this year because I'm pregnant. Dd asked to go somewhere today and I told her we couldn't because of the flu. She's 5 and had no idea what I was talking about lol. We have a birthday party tomorrow and another one in two weeks. I've been stressing over them! I'm going to throw her in the bath as soon as we get home.

Nope. I live my life. I would go crazy if i stayed in the entire winter because i'm worried about illness. I take alot of hand sanitizer wipes with me and wipe my dd daughters hands when she is out.

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
I haven’t been to crowded areas and purposely didn’t go to the javitz boat show because it wasn’t worth it (plus i didn’t want DH to get any ideas lol) My hands are bleeding from washing them so much. Yea, I avoid places when the flu cases are this high. I have chronic Epstein Barr and my immune system isn’t what it used to be. Better to be safe

Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
I haven’t thought about not going out until today. I don’t touch anything with bare hands and wash my hands a lot but today I was in the kid section at the library and I felt like a vampire running from garlic every time I heard a kid cough or sneeze.

I was at homegoods yesterday for all of 5 minutes looking for a bread box. A kid coughed, 2 seconds later A man coughed in the next aisle and someone else sneezed. I said out loud “oh great” and left without the bread box lol I may have held my breath

Re: Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
This is so me
I was so turned off.. I picked up my husband’s stuff from the cleaners the other day and the girl at the register sneezed into her hand before taking my credit card (with the offended hand...) I wanted to run out and just let her keep the card but in reality I held it like it was covered in cooties and didn’t put it back in my wallet for 2 days. This flu season is making us all nuts!

Has anyone been staying indoors because of the flu epidemic?
I have been going about life as usual but have been avoiding any kids play spaces like Legoland. We also have been avoiding the library because our children’s library has tons of toys and on the best day they can not clean it once. Today I took dd to Nature club at the Bronx zoo and then spent the afternoon exploring he indoor exhibits.
