I have DEFINITELY had people thrown away sanitary napkins in the trash (and leave it on top, that is how I know). I wouldn't want that in my trash without a bag. Things like that.

I would have no problem with someone doing this. I wouldn't want anyone to think they had to walk around with it in their bag.  That is what a garbage pail is for...GARBAGE!

i guess i am in the minority but i wouldn't even do that in my own house. i triple wrap with toilet paper, put in a plastic bag, bring outside and put in a bag with other trash .

I don't line any trash bins except for in the kitchen. I would rather not create more garbage by lining each bin with yet another bag. When I empty them, I empty all into one bag.
What is so gross about that?
I do the same thing...for the same reason.
ETA: as far as sanitary napkins or tampons - as long as they wrap it in TP and throw it in the garbage I have no issues....I don't see the sense in wasting all that plastic for one sanitary napkin.

We line all our cans - but we use the plastic bags from the grocery stores as our garabage bags. They get emptied twice a week on garbage pick up day. Except the kitchen which gets emptied each night after dinner is cleaned up.

I only line the kitchen ones.
My cat chews plastic and he would do so to the bathroom and bedroom bins since they are more accessible.

I line my garbage cans only b/c my husband is a slob and he'll throw anything in any garbage can (ie: an apple core in the bedroom can) we also use our garbage cans for diapers now, we line them and toss them daily. I don't think it's gross to keep your trash cans unlined, especially if they are the decorative bathroom pails.
As far as the sanitary napkin issue, they generally come with a wrapper that has a little sticker so that you can wrap it up very neatly and toss it. I would never carry a used SN in my purse. I think that is actually crazy. Tampons also come with little wrappers to dispose of the "inserter" (couldn't remember what they are called...) but if you use OB, you don't even have to worry about that. Though based on the recent postings on various boards on this site, inserting a tampon with no applicator would probably "skeeve" people out too. I think if you wash your hands afterwards though, it should be all good.

As much as I hate the extra waste, we use bags in all of our pails. The thought of wiping them out......

i line all the garbage except the bathroom and the reason being is that everytime i put a new bag in there my hubby dumps the garbage and the bag and never puts an new one and then when i have to throw something out there's no bag. ugh!!!! so now i just clean it every couple of days when the trash goes out!!! but i understand your frustration!!

This thread fascinates me
i thought garbage was just that.. garbage.
To the posters who are so grossed out by garbage cans without liners .. are you planning on sticking your face in and eating out of the garbage cans? if not, then don't worry about it.
i guess i just don't give it a second thought.
FTR, i have liners in my bathroom garbage, but only because it makes it easier to empty and have nothing stick to the sides (i have actual baskets and things can stick to the woven sides)
