Has anyone grieved their taxes on their own?
I was thinking of using one of those services (Mark Lewis Tax Grievance Service), but I called the Suffolk County Assessor's office and they said its as simple as going down there and filling out a form. I'm just wondering if its worth doing it through the service (perhaps they have different methods or more 'pull') or if its the same thing if I do it myself.
TIA!

My parents did it once. They spend an entire day at town hall pulling tax records for all their neighbors. They had to prove that they were paying too much compared to comps in the area.

I just hired Mark Lewis. I am 99% sure doing it on your own is not that easy, but then again I never looked into doing it myself.

I thought taxes were based on what your house is worth on the market? I'm assuming that everyone in my area is paying approximately the same...Because I'm sure they probably assessed my house at being worth FAR MORE than the market will bear. I didn't realize it was based on neighboring houses. I guess it might be worth a call to Mark Lewis. I just thought I'd save myself a buck.
Thanks

You should have heard the assessor's office on the phone! All he said was, all you need to do is sit down with an assessor and fill out the form. So I said, "well then why does everyone hire services if its sooo easy?" His answer was, I have no idea, its the easiest thing to do...I guess he's just a big, fat liar...I don't want to sit there all day.
I guess you haven't heard back yet? If you don't mind my asking, which town do you live in? I'm in Brookhaven and we've had 12% increases for the last, oh, I don't know, 3 years?

Exactly, if it was that easy everyone would do it! I don't have all day or the patience to do it myself. I am in Huntington, just moved in Oct but have spoke to a few neighbors and we pay like $4K more then most of them So can't hurt to try!
I already got a letter back saying that I deserve a reduction and I had to sign something, send it back and I believe they go in May to fight it for me.

Re: Has anyone grieved their taxes on their own?
I had ours reassessed and did it myself. Saved us ~$2000.
It was a matter of gathering comps in the area, providing photos of my home and property along with the appraiser's report and a short paragraph explaining why I felt we were wrongly assessed. Put all the info in an envelope and delivered it to my town assessor's office.
It was easy and didn't cost me a dime.
