Has anyone had blood sugar issues with one pregnancy and not had it with subsequent ones?

Just curious if anyone somehow avoided blood sugar issues with later pregnancies. I failed the 1 hour test with my first two pregnancies with the same reading each time. I passed the 3 hour the first time, but barely failed one of the blood draws with DS2 and was diagnosed with glucose intolerance. It's treated the same as GD, but it never developed into that. From what I've been told, the likelihood of blood sugar issues with pregnancy increases with age and it has been 5 years since being pregnant with DS2. I assume I'll fail the 1 hour again, but I'm wondering if there's any hope of passing the 3 hour this time around.

If you didn't have GD in subsequent pregnancies, did you do anything differently during the pregnancies? Was it just luck of the draw?

Also, did you have to fast for the 1 hour? I've always been told that I don't need to fast for that one by my doctor, but the lab says to fast. I was thinking of eating something like eggs this time around just to see whether it affects my numbers one way or the other.

I didn't have GD with my other two pregnancies, but I did fail the one hour with DD1 after eating breakfast before the test. My then doctor told me it was fine to eat something light. I think I had eggs on dry toast. I failed and then passed the 3 hour. With DD2, I was told to fast ahead of time and I passed, so i'm thinking eating the first time messed up my results.

I've read mixed results on that one. Some say a high protein breakfast like eggs is recommended while others say it can skew the results. I've also read that fasting can alter the results too. I'm torn about it. I've failed the 1 hour both times and fasted. I'm guessing I'll fail again no matter what, but it would be nice to somehow pass the 3 hour this time. I don't like testing my sugar, but what I hated even more was the place that was monitoring me last time. It was a PITA to go to, the appointments were mostly a waste of time and they'd make me feel guilty if I had any readings above normal even though my doctor was happy with my numbers and I never developed GD. Other than the SCH at the beginning, this has been my easiest pregnancy with the fewest complications and I'd like that to continue.

I passed the one hour with both of my pregnancies so no experience with GD or glucose intolerance, but my doctor both times told me just eat normally that day (I had the tests in the afternoon both times). I ate breakfast, lunch and snack at work prior to the one hour test each time and didn't have any issues. I think this might be a case of either you have GD or you don't regardless of what you do or don't eat before the test. If you are curious and your doctor has told you that you don't need to fast I would go about your day normally and see what happens this time. Good luck!!

I've done the test fasting and also by having a no carb breakfast, like carrot sticks and a cheese stick. I've also only ever done it as early in the day as I can to get it over with.

Side note-- I recently learned that the flavors depend on which test you are getting. The orange is for the one hour, the lime is for 2 hr, and the punch is for 3 hour.

I've had all 3. The lime is the worst. Chat Icon

I had GD in my first pregnancy but not in my 2nd (successful) pregnancy. I absolutely did nothing different - I was shocked that I didn't have it again.

Thanks. I do it as early as possible too. I've been to different labs and have taken both the 1 hour and 3 hour with my other pregnancies. I've only ever had the orange flavor. I hate soda and most juices, but as disgusting as it is, I'd rather have the orange flavor over the other options.
