Has anyone heard this expression before?

I just received an auto response email from someone. Am I the only one who's never seen this expression?

"I will be out of pocket at meetings until Monday December 3rd with limited access to e-mail. I will respond to you as soon as possible.............Thanks, Tom"

Out of pocket??

It could be just me, but I've never heard this before.

Very normal expression but I don't usually use it in a out of office message.

Re: Has anyone heard this expression before?

That is so weird. I mean, I would consider myself working in Corporate america, I work for a large corporation employing 20,000 people, and yet I've never heard this expression!

Re: Has anyone heard this expression before?

um, i thought "out of pocket" meant you had to pay for something yourself. what does it mean in corporate america?

Yup, they use it at my company all the time. My understanding is that it means they'll be there at work, but you won't be able to get in touch with them.

Yes, I hear it, read it, and ... even say it a lot. Chat Icon But I never heard it before I went real corporate.

In my office it's usually "I'm so sorry I've been out of pocket this week. I've had back to back meetings on XYZ."

or

"I'm going to an event so I'll be out of pocket for a few hours."

It just means that you won't be available.
