Re: Has anyone heard this expression before?
Yup -its used all the time in my industry - I always took it to mean you will not be accessible at all in that time.

Re: Has anyone heard this expression before?
The FIRST time I heard that expression was on some HBO special about prostitutes. Apparently, "out of pocket" is a term that pimps use when their lady is behaving badly - as in "She got out of pocket, so I had to put the smack down on her."
You can imagine my amusement the first time I heard it used at my office.
It is very common in the corporate world though. It just means they'll be unavailable for a certain time.

Re: Has anyone heard this expression before?
I never heard this when I was working in legal and insurance fields - but now that I work in the Finance industry I hear it ALL of the time. It's a little informal for an out of office message.

What! Never heard that before. Out of pocket to me means I spent $ out of my own pocket

Yup, they use it at my company all the time. My understanding is that it means they'll be there at work, but you won't be able to get in touch with them.
I hear it all the time but usually in the context of out of the office AND out of reach (no blackberry, vmail access etc.)
Now that you mention it, I've heard it used both ways.
I had to laugh b/c my boss just said it earlier - she will be out of pocket due to training on Friday, so she'll be sure to get back to us by COB Thursday!
