Re: Has anyone heard this expression before?
Urban Dictionary ...
To leave your designated area or be out of range.
Can you cover for me? I'm gonna be out of pocket for a whle.
But the # 6 & 7 definitions might be my favorite:
6. When a ho who pays a pimp looks at another pimp or otherwise conversates with him.
That ****** was out of pocket so I broke her grill.
7. A ho who ain't got no folks. A prostitute who pockets her own money i.e. doesn't have a pimp.
I ma smack you up *****. You's an out of pocket ho.

Re: Has anyone heard this expression before?
Since my job here IS research....here is an answer to your question:
Original meaning:
1. Lacking money; also, having suffered a financial loss, as in We can't go; I'm out of pocket right now. William Congreve had it in The Old Bachelor (1693): "But egad, I'm a little out of pocket at present." [Late 1600s] 2. Referring to actual money spent, as in I had to pay the hotel bill out of pocket, but I know I'll be reimbursed. This expression sometimes occurs as a hyphenated adjective mainly in the phrase out-of-pocket expenses, as in My out-of-pocket expenses for business travel amounted to more than a thousand dollars. [Late 1800s]
Modern Day Meaning:
: OUT OF POCKET - "Used in the Southwest for 'absent, unavailable.' 'I'll be out of pocket awhile, but I'll call you as soon as I can." From the "Happy Trails: Western Words and Sayings" chapter in the "Facts on File Dictionary of American Regionalisms: Local Expressions from Coast to Coast" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 2000).

Re: Has anyone heard this expression before?
I read the definitons and it still sounds British, not American.
"I will be out of pocket with my bloody wanker friend who I just got out of the dustbin."

Ha! I figured out what it meant I just never heard the expression before. Out of pocket to me means what it's going to cost you after insurance covers what they cover

Yup, they use it at my company all the time. My understanding is that it means they'll be there at work, but you won't be able to get in touch with them.
I hear it all the time but usually in the context of out of the office AND out of reach (no blackberry, vmail access etc.)
