Has anyone MASTERED taking care of your family first?
I am just wondering how you figured it out and maybe if you can give insight as to why or what was the "revelation" that determined "I am a mommy/wife now, my family comes first".

I think it is different for everyone. My family always comes first, no matter what. But I have always been like this, even before I got married or had my son. So I can't really explain it

Ditto, but now that I'm a mom I can honestly say NOTHING comes before my family. Everything else I do (work is a great example) is for my family, but it is not the first priority - better managers get that too.
I felt family first when mom had a stroke in 2000 and I moved back to LI from Chicago... that may have been my personal pivotting point.

Same here.
Ten years ago, when I was 27 and he was 57 my father has a massive stroke. It required me to move back home, assume a lot of legal and financial responsibility as well as being his main provider of care once he was discharged from a rehab center.
Having one parent die suddenly when I was 8 and the other pretty severely disabled when I was 27, shifted my priorities in life.
I've always been a hard worker/high achiever but now most of my energy is focused towards my family.
My main source of personal fufillment is not my job, hasn't been for a long time.
No one on their death bed wishes they worked more but many regret not spending more time with their family.
I try to live every day with that thought in mind. The greatest gift I can give my family is putting us first.

Re: Has anyone MASTERED taking care of your family first?
When my son ws born I felt that nothing in life was as important as my family, not my job or my friends.
Both have suffer a little because of it, but at the end of the day I know that my son and family are the better for it.
when my son is older he will I hope look back on his childhood and rememebr how Mommy & Daddy were always there for him. Havign had my son at a little older age, I have had alot of me time in this life and now its all about him, and I love it.

Re: Has anyone MASTERED taking care of your family first?
This was a hard lesson to learn for me, because as most everyone has seen from my posts, I grew up in a family where family comes last. It caused some serious clashes between Dh and I in the beginning because he grew up in the opposite.
I think the pinnacle moment when it all changed was when my old firm asked that I attend a retreat in Jamaica for 5 days. They said I could bring DH, but not my daughter, so I told Dh he would have to stay home with her. We had a huge fight, and after that I started to understand what he had been trying to hammer into my head for YEARS about how family always always always comes first.

See but I mean even the more precise family meaning your dh, you and children (not extended family). Like how do you say "No dad I cant come to Thanksgiving bc my child has a fever" ...(very small example) Point being I kinda feel guilty about everything that I need to do for my family and end up giving in due to feeling guilty...KWIM

Re: Has anyone MASTERED taking care of your family first?
My family especially my son comes first. I will leave work in a minute if I have to tend to my son. And i really dont care what they have to say about it. However, I do believe that you have to find that balance with taking care of YOU and taking care of your family.

I see what youre saying.. for me I dont think it was a specific moment.. I just got tired of everyone telling us where we should go and what we should do.
Being 23 I think sometimes I dont get taken as seriously as I would like.
Now the interests and well being of me, fh and dd are most important. If shes sick.. we're home and if you dont understand, oh well!
