Has anyone possibly come into contact with Fifths Disease?
My doctor's office is closed during lunch so I'm waiting to call them back later. One of my co-workers just told me that his son has Fifths Disease. He was advised to inform any pregnant people he comes into contact with about this. I hope I haven't been exposed, but I guess you never know.
Has anyone come into contact with someone who had Fifths Disease or whose family member had Fifths Disease? Did you have to go to the doctor and get some type of blood test?

I was exposed to it early on. I just went and got a blood test and it turns out I was immune.
My OB said a good majority of people are immune but have no idea.

They should have already tested you. I was tested at 10 weeks and found out I was immune. Call to see if they tested you.

I possibly was at about 12 weeks...I am not immune though...it was an isolated case in another 2nd grade class...I was tested immediately and then 4 weeks later...I didn't get it that time

I just had a situation last week. One of the students in my class had it. Chances of contracting it is SO rare. You need to have contact w/ bodily fluids.
The majority of people have immunity to it as well.

I have been exposed to it repeatedly throughout this pregnancy. The first time I went to the Dr. and he sent me for bloodwork. Since I am not immune, everytime I am exposed I have to get more bloodwork and leave work for 2-3 weeks. It is actually a real PITA but at least I know is safe.

I work with young kids and I am constantly exposed to it. Fortunately my OB checked my blood and I am immune to it. Your OB should be able to do the same for you.

Re: Has anyone possibly come into contact with Fifths Disease?
One of the little boys in my daycare had it when I was pg. with my DS...I went to the doctor and I was immune to it (apparently was exposed to it prior)...I honestly don't remember if they gave me a new blood test or if it was part of my initial pregnancy blood draw though

Re: Has anyone possibly come into contact with Fifths Disease?
I had asked my DR about this since there are always students in my school who have it. He said you really only get it by having very close contact (meaning personal contact - hugging, etc.) with someone like a parent and child would have. So the chances of you getting it would be slim, then the chances of you passing it to your baby (according to my DR) is also minimal, making your overall risk very small.

I had to be tested for it as well, since there were students in my school that had it. Go to the doctor and ask for the blood test that determines your immunity. Good luck.

Really? I worked with children and I know that's how I got it. And trust me, I never hugged them and was a very paranoid person who ALWAYS washed their hands, never rubbed my eyes or nose, stayed a good distance from the kids, etc. No one was more paranoid than me, and BOY am I immune. They are the only children I ever had contact with either, so I know that's how I got it.

Thanks everyone. I hadn't been tested for it, but will get the blood test done next week after my doctor's appointment.

Re: Has anyone possibly come into contact with Fifths Disease?
I am a teacher and was told by our school nurse that fifths is only dangerous during the first trimester (has been known to cause miscarriages) - I was tested and I am immune, but if you are not immune and in your second or third trimester the nurse said it shouldn't harm the baby.

Re: Has anyone possibly come into contact with Fifths Disease?
I was exposed and caught it about 28 weeks pg.
I had to be followed at Madonna every week until I gave birth.
They did a Doppler, Biophysical nad growth sonos. Th biggest concern is the baby getting anemia. If there are any signs, the baby is delivered asap..
Brody was born 2 weeks ago at 38 weeks and is perfect!!
