Has anyone's toddler had oral surgery?
Forgive me ladies as I am not online much anymore but I wanted to ask if anyone's toddler has had oral surgery?
We are looking at all molars having cavities and root canal also needed for my not quite yet 4 year old. Seems she had an infection well before her teeth came in and she has no enamel on them.
We have 2 senarios to consider right now. Ped dentist #1 does not sedate and she refuses to let them do anything more than count her teeth. They only use the mask for procedures on children in their offices which they say will not relax her enough for almost 2 hours worth of dental work. They would do xrays and surgery only at Mt. Sinai in NYC and then I have to worry about the trip home to LI afterwards.... but she would be out for the entire procedure and not remember anything.
Went for a 2nd opinion at That Broadway Smile, they sedate her with a needle but she won't be completely knocked out. And again, it is at least a 2 hour oral procedure and I'm worried about her remembering, freaking out or it wearing off. She was better behaved at their offices, still scared but not like the first ped dentist.
If your DC had oral surgery, how long did the procedure last? Were they just sedated or completely knocked out? I'm worried about this as if she does still freak out sedated by only the needle (which TBS doubts) we would still be looking at surgery in a hospital and this cost is almost completely out of pocket for us

I've had the sedation by needle, I think it is called twilight?
I don't remember much of anything so i think she would be fine with that.

Would the surgery with either ped dentist in a hospital setting be completely out of pocket for you or just one or the other?

Re: Has anyone's toddler had oral surgery?
The insurance we do have basically stinks so what would be covered isn't much. I am waiting for both places to submit pretreatment plans to both our dental and medical insurances.
It's going to come down to what is comfortable for DD. As much as I want her to be asleep, I am concerned about the car ride home from Manhattan. There could be major pain afterwards and vomiting. But again, no memory.... I don't know if there would be any memory of it all at That Broadway Smile

It's a twilight, so you are technically awake but not aware I guess? The Doctor said occasionally mumbled something, but otherwise just laid there.
I had it once as an adult (wisdom teeth) and once as a kid when I had to get teeth pulled before I got braces.

Thank you. It makes me feel a little better if we have to go that route
