has this happened to anyone before?
to any of you who had a mc before: did your hcg levels fluctuate alot before going back to 0?
I initally went to my dr with levels in the 20s, then they dropped to 12 when I began bleeding. I was told to wait a week and come back because they should be 0 by then. I went back, and they went up to 36. Again, I waited another week, and my results were only 39, so they barely went up at all from the previous week (36)... I was told that the levels were definitely dropping at this point and to come in next thurs to ensure they are back at 0...
However, I just took another wondfo (i know i'm nuts lol), and it's soooooooo dark compared to previous ones! I don't understand what is happening lol..
So i went from 20, to 12, to 36, to 39. They just keep going up and down, but my doctor said nobody usually gets a d&c with levels this low and to just wait it out..
Is this normal? Last time I had a mc, I bled for like 3 days and my levels were at 0
Has this happened to anyone?

My friend had that and it messed with her emotionally. I think it was almost 3 months before she was at 0. I wish you luck and hope you are at 0 soon. {{{hugs}}}

This is known as beta hell and I haven't personally experienced it but back in 2011(late)I recall several ladies on the IF board who did go through this. I remember it took one of the posters months before it went down to zero. All you can do is wait it out.
Good luck

Re: has this happened to anyone before?
Sadly, yes. It's awful when that happens. As though a mc isn't enough pain (both emotionally and physically) but then adding THAT to it just sucks. It would be nice if it just went to zero in a day or two so one could simply move on to next cycle. I've had several losses, but only watched numbers with a couple. I had one last summer that I can honestly say was the worst. It lasted 2-3 months in total! My numbers were high at the start (in the 2,000 range). When we checked again later it was up to 3,000. Since at that point I had already passed the sac on my own, I had to wonder and HOPE that maybe there was some miracle on its way (like perhaps a twin that the Drs didn't see that survived) but eventually the numbers did start dropping. It seemed to take forever, as I was bleeding so heavy and it was such intense pain & cramping. Then when I was at 100 or maybe a little below that, I reached a standstill for a while and OB did a sono right before I left on vacation and it seemed the reason my numbers were still not at zero was because of some leftover tissue in there. There was talk of medication or even a D&C. But then while on vacation I passed what looked like another sac. NO IDEA what that was, as there really couldn't have been twins (I had had a sono before the loss and there was only one). Maybe a large piece of it that had broken off?? Either way, after that passed, I finally hit zero and was so glad to be done with it. So yes, I have had to play that god-awful numbers game and it's not fun. I feel for you dealing with this now. A pregnancy test wouldn't mean much, as it simply measures the HCG numbers and you know that that's still not below 5 yet. Just wait it out, there's probably more that just needs to pass through and that's why the numbers are being flaky. I hope it goes fast for you.

Re: has this happened to anyone before?
happened to me....
my beta started at like a 12, then rose slowly to 25, then dropped to like 15, then started to slowly climb. it was painfully dragged out. I was about 5 -6 weeks at that point and my level was like a 20 or something like that. they never saw anything on the sono, so they ended up doing a D&C. the day after the d&c it was back to 0. my RE told me that something was "hanging on" which was causing my beta not to go back to zero.
it sucked....sorry you are going through a roller coaster.

has this happened to anyone before?
so i took a wondfo and it's the darkest I've seen, and had a clearblue test with the weeks estimator in my bathroom leftover from last week. I took the clearblue and it said "pregnant 2-3 weeks" meaning 2-3 weeks passed ovulation, which is 5-6 weeks pregnant. I would be 6 weeks tomorrow technically if I didn't miscarry..
I got more bloodwork done today, because they were only 39 last Thursday. The clearblue test on that day said 1-2. Should I be hopeful that my levels finally rose high enough to be in a normal range, or is it more likely that this is leftover tissue that is raising my hcg?
Is there any other reason my hcg could be rising?

Re: has this happened to anyone before?
Did you get your results from the bloodwork you had done today?? If the numbers are beginning to double, I'd say that's a VERY good sign! I guess you still couldn't see anything on an ultrasound yet though. Even if you're 6wks, I know the numbers need to be at least at 2,000 in order to see a sac (with or without a HB). I wouldn't want to say to get your hopes up necessarily, but it's very interesting that the test went from 1-2wks to 2-3. I really do hope this ends up a really awesome story with an amazing outcome. I know how awful this limbo state can be. I always felt like it either needs to be a legit pregnancy or it needs to end so I can move on. Ugh. Please keep me posted, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I just find this so odd because i've only heard/read of stories where people's levels went up because it was ectopic, but I have NO pain at all so I'm kind of ruling that out at this point. Ectopic pregnancies seem to have alot more symptoms than I have (i literally have no symptoms lol)
The only other situation I am reading about is a "vanishing twin" which is not common at all, but when it does happen, it happens in very early pregnancy. You basically implant twice, but your levels drop and you bleed like a miscarriage still. However, one sill sticks and the levels begin to go back up because the one that stuck sucks up the leftover tissue from the other...
who knows! Hate being in limbo though. Will keep you updated tomorrow when I get my results back

At this point if it were ectopic, you wouldn't feel any pain because nothing is big enough. So unfortunately you still need to be monitored. In my own experience, even with rising betas, I still miscarried because at some point it just stops rising. Ie- my first mc was 20,40,60, 100 (spread out over many days).. At that point we knew it would end but it went up to 350 before it came down . Best of luck

Re: has this happened to anyone before?
I had this. It took about a month for me to go back to 0. It was torture. I had to go in every 2 days to get my levels checked. Sometimes the number crept up a bit but my dr never even saw me just kept checking the levels.

I agree. Ectopic pregnancies normally don't get diagnosed until 7-9 weeks so everything would seem normal right now except the embryo isn't growing in the uterus. HPT especially FRER measures HCG as low as 6. CB Digital can pick up levels around 25 so if you were at 39 Thursday and it didn't drop it would definitely say pregnant. All I can suggest if you believe it's not a MC is to request another sonogram.
I hope that it's viable but honestly if you're 6 weeks it doesn't sound too good.

Totally agree with the fact that it doesn't sound good. Only think confusing me is that the clearblue went from a 1-2 week estimation to a 2-3 week so I'm wondering why they would raise. Should be getting my bloodwork back today

Because your beta rose that's why it gives that estimation. If this is indeed a MC I've seen betas go up to 500 even though there's nothing there before it dropped. This is why another sonogram probably should be done just to make sure.

Wow. I'm continuing to hope for you that all ends well with this! I'm glad you're getting a sonogram. No more limbo, it's time to know for sure what's going on. Hang in there.

Wonky numbers like that can be indicative of an ectopic so make sure your dr watches you very close. So sorry you are going through this, I have been there :(

Re: has this happened to anyone before?
With my 3rd m/c, my levels rose slowly all the way to about 500 at 6.5 weeks. They doubled every 2-3 days, but were always way too low. At 6.5 weeks the sono showed an empty sac, never even got a fetal pole with that one. But because the betas were in the 100's, my pregnancy tests were plenty dark. At this point, that doesn't mean anything; it's the sono that's all-important.
I'm sorry you're going through this.

nothing was on the sono at all, not in the tubes or my uterus... Got more bloodwork today to see what the deal is. My doctor said if my levels show higher than 1000, then there is something wrong because something should have shown up on the sono at that point. He is thinking it's possibly ectopic, but either way it is an abnormal pregnancy. He took a bunch of different blood samples today to see what is going on..

at 200 theres no way theyd see anything. Im sure they will just probably keep running betas and keep having you back... wishing you lots of luck... i know one person that went thru beta hell and her dd is 2.5 now

it was 200 last tuesday, and if it doubled every two days, I should around 1500 today
I know the chances of this sticking are slim to none, but i don't really like that my doctor is already telling me of the shot he plans to give me to terminate the pregnancy so we can "start fresh"... He said if my levels are up and it turns out that it isn't ectopic, that he doesn't think it's a viable pregnancy anyway
