Hating Baby Food & Cereal

Anyone else's baby just not like cereal or baby food at all?

DD is 6.5 months. We've been trying cereal for about a month-- she clams up her mouth as soon as she sees the spoon coming. We've been trying veggies for about 2 weeks. Same thing, clams up and gives me the big puffy shut mouth. I can trick her and shove some in here or there, and once it's in there she'll mostly swallow it, but she wants no part of enjoying it. We've tried sweet potatoes, carrots and peas.

I just wish she liked to eat more. I'm hoping it will change in time. I think if she could feed herself, she'd be more happy. She gets annoyed at me cramming the spoon in her mouth.

Re: Hating Baby Food & Cereal

My son was good with the cereal for awhile, but hates the veggies and meats...he used to eat them a little bit, but now nothing. He does love the fruits though. And hes on yogurt, and he loves that too. It's crazy. I just felt good that he was drinking his bottles, because that is where they get the nutrition from right now. I have an appt with his Dr next Fri. I am going to ask him about it then!

My sister never ate babyfood. But. That was in 1982 when there weren't quite so many "restrictions" as there are now.

Re: Hating Baby Food & Cereal

I wouldn't worry...my ped even said its only in the Western world that babies eat baby food...he said in most other parts of the world they go from breastmilk to table food. As long as she's getting her nutrition from the bottle, I wouldn't stress.

Jarred so far. I planned on making my own this weekend, but hate to go through all that trouble if she's going to not eat it & I'll throw it away.

Re: Hating Baby Food & Cereal

DD is also a picky eater. Sometimes she's really good and will eat all her cereal and a few bites of fruits/veggies. Usually though, it can start to become a battle with her.

I've found that if I am also eating while trying to feed her, she's usually more open to eating her food. Also, sometimes I'll let her play with the spoon for a few minutes.

I've even fed her a whole meal using just a finger dipped into her bowl of food (hey~ whatever it takes).

GL~ nice to see our DD are still apparently trading secrets.

Chat Icon I think they email each other sometimes Chat Icon

We started letting her play with the spoon for a few minutes before she ate, and then I would pretend feed her with it. She went for it, but then when it came time for veggies, she clammed right up. I have actually considered feeding her off of my finger too, just to get her used to it since I think she really hates the spoon and would eat the food w/o the spoon, but haven't tried it yet.

How much does she eat now of solids/cereal? We gave up with cereal for now and were concentrating more on veggies.

If I didn't work such long days, I would have done it this way. (Daycare feeds DS some of his solids) I have been following some of the priciples when I'm home with him.

If she likes playing with the spoons, you could also try making a thicker puree, setting up a bunch of spoons for her and letting her play and feed herself.

Yea - if she's not loving the jarred she prob. will hate the homemade (at least Jack did)

Did you give fruits yet? Try them - she may like the taste better and get used to it that way.

Just a suggestion but maybe try fruit. It is a bit sweeter and might go over better. I've also found that eating while feeding DD has been useful.

Re: Hating Baby Food & Cereal

One more thing -

Jack has been pushing the spoon away from me when I first start giving him the foods. He will then have a few spoonfulls - and then get moody - and push it away.

I swear - the Chugga Chugga Chugga Chugga - CHOO CHOO -- works like a charm when he is being moody. He ends up opening wide for me.

It's annoying - but it gets him to eat without spitting it all over me - so that's a plus! Chat Icon

So funny, I just resorted to some ear-shrilling spoon swooping song tonight, it worked (she didn't laugh but she looked at me like what the heck is that??, but 1/2 way opened her mouth and I was able to push it in.

I will try fruits next, thank you ladies. Have to finish with peas tomorrow night, then we'll try bananas or apples Weds. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

They also LOVE the peaches and pears. You can't go wrong with any of the fruits.

Then - down the road - you can mix the veggie with the fruit -- and then slowly get rid of the fruit on the spoon.

Thanks Diana. Should I still be trying to add cereal into the mixture still too?

BTW, I can't belive Jack isn't that into his food sometimes...probably b/c he's ready for steak

Well - let's see - maybe it's the cereal that she doesn't like the taste of.

What I would do is have the cereal ready - give her a taste of the fruit first - see how she reacts - then if she doesn't go for it - try it with some cereal on the spoon? Does she not like Oatmeal either? Jack really didn't love Rice or barley - but always ate the oatmeal.

Once you get her down on fruits - there are delicious jarred once mixed already that Jack LOVES. Oatmeal with pears and cinnamon. And Oatmeal with applesauce and bananas. He eats them right up.

Can't blame him for wanting to move on to bigger & better things Chat Icon

We actually haven't given her cereal for the last 10 days or so, b/c we thought she maybe just hated the bland cereal (she's on oatmeal b/c the rice bound her up) and that she'd like the veggies. I just didn't know if it was bad that we're not even trying with the cereal right now. I didn't know that about the mixed ones w/oatmeal already, that sounds perfect after she likes fruits.

Thanks for the help Diana Chat Icon I'll try apples or bananas Weds night and hopefully we'll have some success and can move from there.

I set myself up, BTW. I always said I wanted a daughter with personality & spunk like her mommy, not a mellow quiet girl. Well, this girl has spunk alright, she clams right up and puffs up her lips and looks at me like "are you crazy?" Chat Icon I got what I asked for! Chat Icon
